The Courtesan

A timeless novel inspired by the legendary real-life Chinese courtesan Sai Jinhua—an extraordinary woman who bridged two worlds in the twilight decades of the Qing dynasty, a tumultuous era of East meets West. The year is 1881. Seven-year-old Jinhua is left an orphan, alone and unprotected after her mandarin father’s summary execution for the crime of speaking the truth. For seven silver coins, she is sold to a brothel-keeper and subjected to the worst of human nature. When an elegant but troubled scholar takes Jinhua as his concubine, she enters the close world of his jealous first wife. Yet it is Jinhua who accompanies him—as emissary to the foreign devil nations of Prussia, Austria-...

ESCAPE

A group of Chinese rural women who want to get rid of difficulties, after entering the city, something unexpected happened... It takes Zheng Jinhua, a rural woman in Fujian and eastern Fujian as the main line. It tells about her experiences when she was young, after marriage and "working in the city", and describes her tragic childhood, humiliating youth, difficult marriage, and emotional life. At the same time, it depicts the fate of 12 rural women. The novel begins with the news of Zheng Fangmei's death, which leads to the memories of Zheng Jinhua's childhood and youth stories, as well as the process of struggling for family life after adulthood. The book describes her emotional entanglements with her lover Chen Yuejin, her husband Huang Biaofu, Fa Xiaozhengbin, and fellow villager Huang Jianfeng. This book reflects the current situation of farmers in the Chinese Mainland working in cities from the end of the twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century, particularly vividly describing the real events of ordinary rural women, and typically reveals the emotional world of these women.

Dai Jinhua is one of contemporary China's most influential theoreticians and cultural critics. A feminist Marxist, her literary, film and TV commentary has, over the last decade, addressed an expanding audience in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Cinema and Desire presents Dai Jinhau's best work to date. In it she examines the Orientalism that made Zhang Yimou the darling of international film festivals, establishes Huang Shuqin's Human, Woman, Demon as the People's Republic's first genuinely feminist film, comments on TV representations of the Chinese diaspora in New York, speculates on the value of Mao Zedong as an icon of post-revolutionary consumerism, and analyses the rise of shopping plazas in 1990s' urban China as a strange montage in which the political memories of Tiananmen Square and the logic of the global capitalist marketplace are intertwined.

Pioneers of Modern China

Amongst the Chinese exists great cultural variety and diversity. The Cantonese care more for profit than face and are good businessmen, whereas Fujian R‚n are frank, blunt and outspoken but daring and generous. Beijing R‚n are more aristocratic and well-mannered, having stayed in a city ruled by emperors of different dynasties. Shanghai R‚n are more enterprising, adventurous and materialistic but less aristocratic, having been at the center of pre-war gangsterism. Hainan R‚n are straightforward, blunt and stubborn. Hunan R‚n are more warlike and have produced more marshals and generals than any other province.Pioneers of Modern China is a fascinating book that paints a vivid picture of the unique cultural characteristics and behavior of the Chinese in the various provinces. Using leaders in the modern history of China, such as Sun Yat Sen, Chiang Kai Shek, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao as representatives, it offers an in-depth look into the psyche of the Chinese people. It also pays tribute to writers, painters and kungfu experts, who have helped to develop the country socially and artistically.

China's party-run courts have one of the highest conviction rates in the world, with forced confessions remaining a central feature. Despite recent prohibitions on evidence obtained through coercion or torture, forced confessions continue to undermine the Chinese judicial system. Recounting some harrowing cases of wrongful conviction, acclaimed legal scholar and novelist He Jiahong analyzes many problems in China's justice system. In one such case, Teng Xingshan was convicted in 1988 and later executed for murdering his mistress, but almost six years later it was discovered that the supposed victim, Shi Xiaorong, was still alive. In 2005, Teng's children submitted a complaint to the Hunan Hi...

Plantain Valley

Plantain Valley is a collection of short stories by the master storyteller Ai Wu. Mrs. Jiang in "Plantain Valley," Mrs. Zhou in "A Woman's Tragedy," and Mrs. Shiqing in "Mrs. Shiqing," are all workwomen of the underclass in the border area. They live in endurance and diligence, with the mere hope of rudimentary living and that their family members will remain safe. However, in the "Ghostlike World" of the old days, the ubiquitous darkness suffocates them so they cannot escape from all this, even though they bear a "strong desire for living" and show "obscure actions of resistance." Readers see a series of tragedies and suffering in that society, and no matter if alive or dead, people are better dead than alive due to these tragedies.
