Hu Jintao and the Ascendancy of China

A Dutch sinologist, Hans Kuijper, once wrote that if you do not apply a model or theory in your study of Chinese (Communist) affairs, you are a pseudo-scientist. The paper was published in the July-September 2000 issue of China Report. According to the latest findings, the dialectical and non-dialectical China can be said to have a recorded history of 10,000 years. Noted historian Professor Wang Gungwu had said that there were many problems with Western books on Zhongguo (and the dialectical China). Yu Ying-shih, another noted historian, had stated that it was not proper to apply theories in the West to study Zhongguo. Professor Tu Wei-ming wrote, any approach we choose to study China is inevitably theory-laden and value-laden; it is naive to believe that we can ever arrive at a totally objective analysis or strictly factual explanation of China and that our interpretation is value-free. The author also refers to Shi Dongbing, a mainland China writer who had written more than 20 mil

Drawing on hundreds of interviews with top Chinese officials, parliamentarians, scholars, and businessmen, Willy Lam, a renowned journalist and writer on Chinese affairs, presents a first-hand, multi-dimensional account of twenty-first century China and the impact of fourth generation leaders, including President Hu Jinato and Premier Wen Jiabao. Lam goes behind the glitzy facade of nouveau-riche Beijing and Shanghai to examine how the Hu leadership has tried to extend the Communist Party's "mandate of heaven" by tackling an array of daunting problems: the weakening legitimacy of the Party's leadership; restive peasants; angry workers; political stagnation over the lack of reform; foreign re...

Cameras and Display Systems Towards Photorealistic 3D Holography

This book presents recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) imaging and display frameworks, encompassing three categories of 3D imaging and display technologies. The first category is nonphotorealistic 3D approaches based on conventional optical cameras to implement 3D stereoscopic observation of a scene. In the context of nonphotorealistic 3D imaging and reconstruction systems, the authors introduce general principles and also demonstrate camera calibration for 3D imaging, smart cameras, and full-link imaging methods using the optical modulation transfer function to improve imaging quality in conventional cameras. The second category is based on light-ray light field technology to achieve ...

"Are China's growing energy needs insatiable, and is a resource war between China and other major energy-consuming countries, such as the United States, inevitable? China's pursuit of overseas energy resources to feed its fast-growing economy has given rise to observations that energy is now the driving force behind Chinese foreign policy and predictions that potential conflicts between China and other countries are likely to arise as China becomes more aggressive internationally in search of resources ... This paper addresses these questions by looking at China's nengyuan waijiao (energy diplomacy) with special reference the developing world, especially Africa and Latin America--the regions...

This book examines China’s involvement in international governance, international regimes, and globalization. Peter Kien-hong Yu offers a new framework with which to understand ‘international regimes’ and applies it to important Chinese case studies such as arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation; the counter-piracy regime and the environmental issue. Whilst internationally important matters related to such systems are identified, Yu’s discussions attempt to find out whether any particular system works better in relation to China, and asks if not, why not? After examining eight different cases, the author concludes that these regimes are working but there is ample room for improvement and that the Chinese (Communists) for one have to enhance their understanding of international governance and try to export their experience to other parts of the world. International Governance and Regimes will be appeal to anyone interested in International Politics, Chinese Studies, Political theory and International Relations.

International Governance, Regimes, and Globalization

In the this collection, International Governance, Regimes, and Globalization, the writers explore international political relations and globalization by using specific examples from Beijing and Taipei. In December 1949, when China was politically divided the People's Republic of China (PRC), the central government was in control of most resources, tangible and intangible. For that reason, our unit of analysis has to be the state, meaning a government or a politically organized body. With the rise of civil society at both national and international levels, applying the international/global governance theory should be closer to reality, because we have to look at both the state and non-state-sponsored dimensions.
