Recent Advances in Problems of Flow and Transport in Porous Media

Porous media, and especially phenomena of transport in such materials, are an impor1ant field of interest for geologists, hydrogeologists, researchers in soil and fluid mechanics, petroleum and chemical engineers, physicists and scientists in many other disciplines. The development of better numerical simulation techniques in combination with the enormous expansion of computer tools, have enabled numerical simulation of transport phenomena (mass of phases and components, energy etc. ) in porous domains of interest. Before any practical application of the results of such simulations can be used, it is essential that the simulation models have been proven to be valid. In order to establish the...

Computational Methods for Flow and Transport in Porous Media

The first Symposium on Recent Advances in Problems of Flow and Transport in Porous Media was held in Marrakech in June '96 and has provided a focus for the utilization of computer methods for solving the many complex problems encountered in the field of solute transport in porous media. This symposium has been successful in bringing together scientists, physicists, hydrogeologists, researchers in soil and fluid mechanics and engineers involved in this multidisciplinary subject. It is clear that the utilization of computer-based models in this domain is still rapidly expanding and that new and novel solutions are being developed. The contributed papers which form this book reflect the recent ...

Contains papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (1997), which provide evidence that computer-based models, and in particular numerical methods, are becoming essential tools for the solution of many problems encountered in the field of biomedical engineering. The range of subject areas presented include the modeling of hip and knee joint replacements, assessment of fatigue damage in cemented hip prostheses, nonlinear analysis of hard and soft tissue, methods for the simulation of bone adaptation, bone reconstruction using implants, and computational techniques to model human impact. Fluid-structure interaction is a new theme of investigation in computational methods, covering many applications in both engineering and medical sciences. This book deals with various examples of interaction between a fluid and a structure, and each author presents, for the different problems involved, the method which is considered to be the most appropriate.

Soil Mechanics and Transport in Porous Media

"This book contains an overview of the most relevant scientific contributions of Gerard de Josselin de Jong to the development of both Soil Mechanics and Transport in Porous Media. The volume comprises a selection of papers by de Josselin de Jong as they were published in the international scientific literature. In addition, some unpublished, but highly relevant work has been included. The selected papers were published in the period 1950-1990. They clearly demonstrate the development of ideas and the profound contributions of de Josselin de Jong." "This volume is intended for scientists, and engineers, working in geohydrology, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, environmental engineering, and transport in porous media. In addition, the volume will be of interest to students studying one of the aforementioned fields."--Jacket.

Localization and Sheaves

This book completely solves the problem of representing rings (and modules over them), which are locally noetherian over subsets of their prime spectrum by structure sheaves over this subset. In order to realise this, one has to develop the necessary localization theory as well as to study local equivalents of familiar concepts like the Artin-Rees property, Ore sets and the second layer condition. The first part of the book is introductory and self-contained, and might serve as a starting course (at graduate level) on localization theory within Grothendieck categories. The second part is more specialised and provides the basic machinery needed to effectively these structure sheaves, as well as to study their functorial behaviour. In this way, the book should be viewed as a first introduction to what should be called relative noncommutative algebraic geometry.

The Method of Volume Averaging

Multiphase systems dominate nearly every area of science and technology, and the method of volume averaging provides a rigorous foundation for the analysis of these systems. The development is based on classical continuum physics, and it provides both the spatially smoothed equations and a method of predicting the effective transport coefficients that appear in those equations. The text is based on a ten-week graduate course that has been taught for more than 20 years at the University of California at Davis and at other universities around the world. Problems dealing with both the theoretical foundations and the applications are included with each chapter, and detailed solutions for all problems are available from the author. The course has attracted participants from chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, hydrologic science, mathematics, chemistry and physics.

An important class of integral expansions generated by Sturm-Liouville theory involving spherical harmonics is commonly known as Mehler-Fock integral transforms. In this book, a number of integral expansions of such type have been established rigorously. As applications, integral expansions of some simple function are also obtained.
