La Divine Comédie
Parmi les très nombreuses traductions françaises de La Divine Comédie de Dante celle de Joachim-Joseph Berthier occupe incontestablement une place à part. En effet, ce dominicain, qui a été recteur de l'Université de Fribourg (Suisse), entend proposer une traduction littérale qui permet, en respectant les conseils de traduction de Chateaubriand, de « suivre le texte, ligne à ligne, mot à mot », calquant ainsi le poème avec une exacte transparence.Toutefois, cette littéralité n'est pas la seule spécificité de cette traduction publiée en 1924. Convaincu que Dante le poète fut aussi un docteur, à savoir un philosophe et un théologien, Berthier considère que le « poème sacré » transmet un enseignement qui doit servir « pour le bien du monde qui vit mal », conformément à l'intention de Dante lui-même (Purgatoire XXXII, 103).
