"Beyond Wavelets" presents state-of-the-art theories, methods, algorithms, and applications of mathematical extensions for classical wavelet analysis. Wavelets, introduced 20 years ago byMorlet and Grossmann and developed very rapidly during the 1980's and 1990's, has created a common link between computational mathematics and other disciplines of science and engineering.Classical wavelets have provided effective and efficient mathematical tools for time-frequency analysis which enhances and replaces the Fourier approach. However, with the current advances in science and technology, there is an immediate need to extend wavelet mathematical tools as well. "Beyond Wavelets" presents a list of i...

Modern developments in multivariate approximation

This volume contains a selection of eighteen peer-reviewed articles that were presented at the 5th International Conference on Multivariate Approximation, held in Witten-Bommerholz in September 2002. The contributions cover recent developments of constructive approximation on manifolds, approximation by splines and kernels, subdivision techniques and wavelet methods. The main topics are: - applications of multivariate approximation in finance - approximation and stable reconstruction of images, data reduction - multivariate splines for Lagrange interpolation and quasi-interpolation - radial basis functions - spherical point sets - refinable function vectors and non-stationary subdivision - applications of adaptive wavelet methods - blending functions and cubature formulae - singularities of harmonic functions The book provides an overview of state-of-the-art developments in a highly relevant field of applied mathematics, with many links to computer science and geophysics.

Advanced Topics In Multivariate Approximation - Proceedings Of The International Workshop

This volume consists of 24 refereed carefully edited papers on various topics in multivariate approximation. It represents the proceedings of a workshop organized by the University of Firenze, and held in September 1995 in Montecatini, Italy. The main themes of the volume are multiresolution analysis and wavelets, multidimensional interpolation and smoothing, and computer-aided geometric design. A number of particular topics are included, like subdivision algorithms, constrained approximation and shape-preserving algorithms, thin plate splines, radial basis functions, treatment of scattered data, rational surfaces and offsets, blossoming, grid generation, surface reconstruction, algebraic curves and surfaces, and neural networks.

Advances in Multiresolution for Geometric Modelling

Multiresolution methods in geometric modelling are concerned with the generation, representation, and manipulation of geometric objects at several levels of detail. Applications include fast visualization and rendering as well as coding, compression, and digital transmission of 3D geometric objects. This book marks the culmination of the four-year EU-funded research project, Multiresolution in Geometric Modelling (MINGLE). The book contains seven survey papers, providing a detailed overview of recent advances in the various fields within multiresolution modelling, and sixteen additional research papers. Each of the seven parts of the book starts with a survey paper, followed by the associated research papers in that area. All papers were originally presented at the MINGLE 2003 workshop held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, UK, 9-11 September 2003.

Approximation by Solutions of Partial Differential Equations

This volume consists of the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Approximation by Solutions of Partial Differential Equations, Quadrature Formulae, and Related Topics, which was held at Hanstholm, Denmark. These proceedings include the main invited talks and contributed papers given during the workshop. The aim of these lectures was to present a selection of results of the latest research in the field. In addition to covering topics in approximation by solutions of partial differential equations and quadrature formulae, this volume is also concerned with related areas, such as Gaussian quadratures, the Pompelu problem, rational approximation to the Fresnel integral, boundary correspondence of univalent harmonic mappings, the application of the Hilbert transform in two dimensional aerodynamics, finely open sets in the limit set of a finitely generated Kleinian group, scattering theory, harmonic and maximal measures for rational functions and the solution of the classical Dirichlet problem. In addition, this volume includes some problems in potential theory which were presented in the Problem Session at Hanstholm.

Approximation Theory Eight

This is the collection of the refereed and edited papers presented at the 8th Texas International Conference on Approximation Theory. It is interdisciplinary in nature and consists of two volumes. The central theme of Vol. I is the core of approximation theory. It includes such important areas as qualitative approximations, interpolation theory, rational approximations, radial-basis functions, and splines. The second volume focuses on topics related to wavelet analysis, including multiresolution and multi-level approximation, subdivision schemes in CAGD, and applications.
