Mental Illness and Neuropsychiatry of the Homeless: Psychosis, Personality, Drug Abuse, and Other Brain Disorders

Homeless people with mental disorders and neuropsychiatric diseases are ubiquitous, in space and time, in mankind’s history. Psychosis, personality disorders, drug abuse, and other brain illnesses represent a true challenge to medicine and society. Homeless people could be, indeed, brought to the attention of marontology, an unborn specialty of medicine, already suggested after the Greek word marontos, which means unwanted. Homelessness is one of the most critically important issues of the contemporaneous world, without a solution in sight, so more research in areas such as psychiatry, psychology, and human neuroscience is needed, for a better understanding of the phenomenon.

Visualization Psychology

This book designates Visualization Psychology as an interdisciplinary subject. The book contains literature reviews and experimental works that exemplify a range of open questions at this critical intersection. It also includes discourses that envision how the subject may be developed in the coming years and decades. The field of visualization is a rich playground for discovering new knowledge in both visualization and psychology. As visualization techniques augment human cognition, these techniques must be developed and improved by building on theoretical, empirical and methodological knowledge from psychology. At the same time, visualization processes surface numerous phenomena about interactions between the human mind and digital entities, such as data, visual imagery, algorithms, and computer-generated predictions and recommendations. Visualization psychology is a new type of science in the making.

The Book Block is a manual of industrial binding techniques, the first in the Making a Book collection, which focuses on manuals for graphic book production. With the aim of elevating knowledge about graphic production among designers — helping them to produce better books and communicate more effectively with all those involved in the process — The Book Block brings together the 17 most common industrial binding techniques in 6 categories, exploring each one in detail, describing them and showing what is possible to do in this day and age. Conceived from scratch to be bilingual, in Portuguese and English, the book seeks to systematize Portuguese terminology in the printing industry, while providing the same information in the lingua franca of today’s global market: English. In an international context, with customers, employees and producers sprinkled throughout the world, this book provides the perfect tool for an effective communication. Developed by experienced book designers and bookbinders — Itemzero and Maiadouro — this book is a summary of decades of know-how, now easily made available.

Treating Trauma Survivors With PTSD

In recent years, considerable research, as well as clinical guidelines based on study findings, has been published on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A gap remains, however, between the controlled environments and protocols used in intervention research and the more complex and often imperfect settings and situations that clinicians must navigate in daily practice. Moreover, clinicians routinely see patients whose comorbid substance abuse, self-destructive behavior, or medical illness would likely exclude them from research studies. In short, although the extensive literature is certainly helpful in articulating the various treatment modalities available to clinicians,...
