The Sorceress
The Sorceress focuses on discrimination, love, superstition, and persecution. The story is set in Granada immediately after the conquest by the Spaniards. It revolves around two central figures, a Castilian officer and a cultured Moorish woman. The woman ignores an order of the Inquisition imposing the death penalty upon partnerships between Christians and unconverted Moslems. She has the strength to claim their rights as human beings and suffer the unavoidable results of her resilience. The play opens with a funny scene in which a petty officer who has been granted authority is bullying a group of peasants. Among this crowd is supposed to be the culprit who had stolen the corpse of an executed criminal publicly exposed. The body was of an unconverted Moor who had fallen in love with a Christian girl. In no time background of superstition is painted using the words of the ignorant natives. The famous French dramatist, Victorien Sardou, depicts the struggle for individual freedom during that period. This work is proof of Sardou's excellent technique. The series of events is natural, and the transition from situation to situation is presented honestly.
Women, the Arts, and Dictatorship in the Portuguese-Speaking Context
This book deals with the work of twentieth-century women artists and literary authors from Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking African countries against the backdrop of political dictatorships. The essays in this volume reflect upon and challenge canonical perspectives on the arts and literature, bringing to light some of the hidden and silenced faces of Lusophone culture. By doing so, they highlight how dominant ideologies marked the artistic and literary practices of Portuguese-speaking women, and how these women in turn developed strategies of resistance through their creative work. The volume brings together contributors working in a range of disciplines, including literary criticism, the visual arts, and film studies, all of whom reflect on themes such as the reactions of women artists to authoritarianism, the representations of political repression in their work, the colonial war, and the critical revision of this historical moment by a younger generation of artists. It addresses scholars, critics, students and cultural workers with an interest in post-colonial and feminist studies in the Portuguese-speaking context.

This volume presents the most complete and up-to-date accounts of our understanding of the Magellanic Clouds and the astrophysical processes within them. Observations of these nearby dwarf galaxies continue to advance, calibrate and challenge our knowledge of the cosmos. They are rich in gas, they have been actively forming stars throughout their history, and they display a wealth of dynamical features. Poor in metals, they serve as a stepping stone towards understanding the high-redshift Universe. In IAU Symposium 256, scientists from vastly different fields of research discuss galactic dynamics, the physics of the interstellar medium and star formation, and the fundamental properties and evolution of stars. New insight was gained by crossing the traditional boundaries of these fields, placing the findings in the context of the structure and evolution of this interacting pair of galaxies uniquely available to our ever more powerful telescopes and computational machinery.
Personality and Brain Disorders
Brain disorders (neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, and affective disorders) can be investigated, treated, and prevented using person-centered methods. Because researchers have not reached a clear consensus on whether or not personality is stable or changeable, it has been difficult to outline how to use these methods in the care of people with brain disorders. Thus, the first part aims to identify the ways in which brain disorders and personality are linked. The second part explores different person-centered approaches that can be incorporated in a healthcare or education setting to help people with various brain disorders and to promote physical, mental and social health. The third part focuses on challenges and new venues.

When I started blogging almost 10 years ago, on the 4th of August 2016, my goal was to have a place where I could capture and express my thoughts and feelings about stuff, i.e., a place where I could digress about the things that interested me (Shakespeare, SF, Opera, Film, etc.) It also provided a kind of repository where my kids, say, could go to get glimpses of me that may go unexplored otherwise. For me, blogging was never about numbers, instead it was about meaning and sharing meaning with those who cared. I'm not a writer, not even an aspiring one. I am an Engineer with a lot going on in heart and mind that I'd like to build into a legacy of sorts. So I'm not into volume in terms of blog hits and the like. You won't find on my blog the answer why we go to Shake-speare's plays even when we know the outcome of everyone of them. Are there people interested in knowing this? I doubt it. I don't even know whether there are still people reading Shakespeare in Elizabethan English!

The workshop on The Cosmology of Extra Dimensions and Varying Fundamental Constants, which was part of JENAM 2002, was held at the Physics Department of the University of Porto (FCUP) from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2002.
