Mexico at the World's Fairs

This intriguing study of Mexico's participation in world's fairs from 1889 to 1929 explores Mexico's self-presentation at these fairs as a reflection of the country's drive toward nationalization and a modernized image. Mauricio Tenorio-Trillo contrasts Mexico's presence at the 1889 Paris fair—where its display was the largest and most expensive Mexico has ever mounted—with Mexico's presence after the 1910 Mexican Revolution at fairs in Rio de Janeiro in 1922 and Seville in 1929. Rather than seeing the revolution as a sharp break, Tenorio-Trillo points to important continuities between the pre- and post-revolution periods. He also discusses how, internationally, the character of world's ...

Description of Input and Examples for Phreeqc Version 3

PHREEQC version 3 is a computer program written in the C and C++ programming languages that is designed to perform a wide variety of aqueous geochemical calculations. PHREEQC implements several types of aqueous models: two ion-association aqueous models (the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory model and WATEQ4F), a Pitzer specific-ion-interaction aqueous model, and the SIT (Specific ion Interaction Theory) aqueous model. Using any of these aqueous models, PHREEQC has capabilities for (1) speciation and saturation-index calculations; (2) batch-reaction and one-dimensional (1D) transport calculations with reversible and irreversible reactions, which include aqueous, mineral, gas, solid-solution, surface-complexation, and ion-exchange equilibria, and specified mole transfers of reactants, kinetically controlled reactions, mixing of solutions, and pressure and temperature changes; and (3) inverse modeling, which finds sets of mineral and gas mole transfers that account for differences in composition between waters within specified compositional uncertainty limits.

Border Correspondent

This first major collection of former Los Angeles Times reporter and columnist Ruben Salazar's writings, is a testament to his pioneering role in the Mexican American community, in journalism, and in the evolution of race relations in the U.S. Taken together, the articles serve as a documentary history of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and of the changing perspective of the nation as a whole. Since his tragic death while covering the massive Chicano antiwar moratorium in Los Angeles on August 29, 1970, Ruben Salazar has become a legend in the Chicano community. As a reporter and later as a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, Salazar was the first journalist of Mexican American background...

We tend to associate small town economic development with the decline of the rural United States--empty houses, shuttered shops and rusting factories. A common diagnosis of sluggish small town recovery is their lack of lifestyle amenities that attract new residents and businesses. Yet many small towns have shown progress and potential in recent years. This collection of recent articles by experts presents stories of small-town America's struggle and describes innovations and practices behind successful revivals.

Storms can be violent, scary, and tumultuous and bring about feelings of confusion, anxiety, and fear. Storms can knock out energy and power and leave us feeling exhausted. They force us to have to face the reality of having to find the strength to rebuild from the ground up. Reigning in the Storm uses the analogy of nature's storms to illustrate the upheaval of life when life sends storms our way. Storms of divorce, financial issues, infertility, job loss, pandemics, and unfortunately death (just to name to a few) can all bring about the dreadful feeling of defeat. Favor Campbell uses her own personal storms of divorce (partially brought on by her ex-husband's relationship with a woman she knew -his former employee), his marriage to the employee, an unplanned pregnancy followed by a miscarriage, and navigating life as a single mom to illustrate and remind readers that going through challenging, unforeseen, and devastating storms does not have to leave you broken. God will rebuild you stronger and never leave you to fend for yourself. Reigning in the Storm reminds us that God can and will turn the rain and hell into an amazing journey that will lead us to reign in our storms.
