Texans at Antietam

The Texans from Hood's Texas Brigade and other regiments who fought at Antietam on 16-17 September 1862 described their experiences of the battle in personal diaries, interviews, newspaper articles, letters, and speeches. Their reminiscences provide a fascinating and harrowing account of the battle as they fought the Army of the Potomac. This book collates their writings alongside speeches that were given in the decades after the battle, during the annual reunions of Hood's Brigade Association and the dedication of the Hood's Brigade Monument at the state capital in Austin, Texas. These accounts describe their actions at the East Woods, Dunker's Church and Miller's Cornfield, and other areas during the battle. For the first time ever, their experiences are compiled in Texans at Antietam: A Terrible Clash of Arms, 16-17 September 1862.

Sir Richard Dry was the most popular and revered figure of 19th Century Tasmania. Was he also Australia’s first gay political leader? You decide. He was extraordinarily generous, gregarious, hospitable and public spirited. Though endowed with little business sense and afflicted by gambling, he inherited considerable wealth, which he enjoyed and spread around liberally. His great passions were education, railways, self-government and opposition to the convict system. Sadly, he died just before our first railway was completed.

“Engagingly written and persuasively argued, this daringly revisionist book is an essential addition to the Antietam bibliography.” —Brian Matthew Jordan, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of Marching Home What if the histories previously written about Robert E. Lee’s 1862 Maryland Campaign, the first major Confederate operation north of the Potomac River, missed key sources, proceeded from mistaken readings of the evidence, or were influenced by Lost Cause ideology? As Alexander B. Rossino, author of the acclaimed Six Days in September, demonstrates in Their Maryland: The Army of Northern Virginia from the Potomac Crossing to Sharpsburg in September 1862, these types of distortions...
