Integrating the Organization of Health Services, Worker Wellbeing and Quality of Care

This book introduces the concept of ‘healthy healthcare’ and posits that this new concept is necessary in light of a shortage of healthcare staff in the near future. Healthy healthcare implies that healthcare systems are designed, managed and financed in balance with the available resources to improve workers’ health and performance. Ultimately, a balanced perspective taking into account the patient, the staff and the complex healthcare system will lead to a more resource-efficient delivery of high-quality healthcare services. The book synthesizes evidence-based practice and research on the links between healthcare services, employee health and wellbeing, and quality of healthcare from...

Facilities Management and Corporate Real Estate Management as Value Drivers

Facilities Management (FM) and Corporate Real Estate Management (CREM) are two closely related and relatively new management disciplines with developing international professions and increasing academic attention. Both disciplines have from the outset a strong focus on controlling and reducing cost for real estate, facilities and related services. In recent years there has been a change towards putting more focus on how FM/CREM can add value to the organisation. This book is driven by the need to develop a widely accepted and easily applicable conceptual framework of adding value by FM and CREM. It presents the state of the art of theoretical knowledge and empirical evidence about the impact...

I Swear I Use No Art at All

This book displays and dissects the career and design motives of graphic designer Joost Grootens. In a systematic fashion it charts the first 100 books designed by Grootens over the past ten years. In the first chapter, '10 years', Grootens uses timelines, lists and graphs to map the course of his career as a designer, the people he worked with and the places where the work took place. In '100 books', the designer dissects his book designs. He details the grids, formats, paper stocks, colours and typefaces, and charts the books' structures and compositions. '18,788 pages' shows at actual size a selection of spreads from books designed by Grootens, including the internationally acclaimed atlases. In the text 'I swear I use no art at all' Joost Grootens gives a personal account of making books and the ideas behind his designs.

Atlas of the New Dutch Water Defence Line

This atlas addresses the New Dutch Water Defence Line (Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie) on a themed basis. Its position in the landscape, the forts, the inundation system, the geomorphology, the strategic system and recent developments can be read off in maps rendered so as to give an understanding of all aspects of the defence line landscape. The defence line reveals itself as a many-tentacled military defensive system of forts, group shelters and polders that can be flooded at the threat of war. The maps show the cohesion of the defence line as a landscape-strategic structure as well as the topographic composition of this structure in layers and components. The more detailed maps of the forts display the wealth of historic places, insertions in the landscape and defining elements. The atlas offers administrators something to lean on and designers a sense of freedom - a solid stepping-off point for getting this unique national landscape literally back on the map. Essays place the New Dutch Water Defense Line in a historical perspective

Formal Methods in Architecture and Urbanism

Formal Methods in Architecture and Urbanism

The book promotes the use of formal methods in the creation of new explicit languages for problem solving in architecture and urbanism. Formal methods bring advantages to human actions and involve the use of theoretically driven techniques, expressed in languages stemmed from mathematics. Formalization seeks to guarantee that solutions for daily problems are produced in a manner that ensures their greatest possible adequacy and the least test time in direct confrontation with reality. This book contributes to the progress of formalization in architectural methodologies by finding points of convergence between state of the art research on ontologies in architecture, BIM/VDC, CAD/CAM, cellular automata, GIS, parametric processes, processing and space syntax presented within the 3rd Symposium of Formal Methods in Architecture. The contents reach from millennial geometry to current shape grammars, engaging several formal approaches to architecture and urbanism, with different points of view, fields of application, grades of abstraction and formalization.

In this thesis, the ideas and concepts of Corporate Real Estate Management (CREM) are examined in terms of the contribution they could make to the process of accommodation decision by using recent cases in Dutch hospitals. CREM can be defined as the management of the real estate portfolio of a corporation by aligning the portfolio and services with the needs of the core business in order to obtain maximum added value for the business and an optimal contribution to the overall performance of the organisation. This definition assumes that accommodation can add value to the organisation and contribute to its overall achievement. Elaborating on the added value of real estate in addition to quantifying these added values and making them applicable to hospital real estate management is therefore central to this study.

Calvinism s influence and reputation have received ample scholarly attention. But how John Calvin himself his person, character, and deeds was remembered, commemorated, and memorialized, is a question few historians have addressed. Focussing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this volume aims to open up the subject with chapters on Calvin s monumentalization in statues and museums, his appearance in novels, children s books, and travel writing, his iconic function for Hungarian nationalists and Presbyterian missionaries to China, his reputation among Mormons and freethinkers, and his rivalry with Michael Servetus in French Protestant memory. The result is a fresh contribution to the field of religious memory studies and an invitation to further comparative research.Contributors include: R. Bryan Bademan, Patrick Cabanel, R. Scott Clark, Thomas J. Davis, Stephen S. Francis, Joe B. Fulton, Botond Gaál, Stefan Laube, Johan de Niet, Herman Paul, James Rigney, Michèle Sacquin, Jonathan Seitz, Robert Vosloo, Bart Wallet, and Valentine Zuber.
