Arthur Seyß-Inquart und die deutsche Besatzungspolitik in den Niederlanden (1940-1945)
Arthur Seyß-Inquart steht für eine außergewöhnliche Karriere: Innerhalb kurzer Zeit stieg der Wiener Rechtsanwalt zu einem einflussreichen Funktionär des NS-Regimes auf. Besonders in seiner Funktion als Reichskommissar trug er zwischen 1940 und 1945 die Verantwortung für die Nazifizierung und Gleichschaltung der Niederlande. In diesem Buch wird zum ersten Mal seine Politik in Den Haag umfassend analysiert. Welche Handlungs- und Entscheidungsspielräume hatte Hitlers Statthalter in den Niederlanden? Wie gelang es diesem Aufsteiger, seine Position innerhalb des NS-Regimes bis Kriegsende zu festigen? Und wie lässt er sich unter den nationalsozialistischen Tätern einordnen? Letztlich kann anhand von Seyß-Inquart die Bedeutung von ‚Zwischeninstanzen‘ für das NS-System deutlich gemacht werden.

Im Dezember 2015 widerrief die Universität Salzburg die Ehrendoktorate, die sie 1983 Konrad Lorenz und Wolfgang Hefermehl ungeachtet ihrer nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit verliehen hatte. Der Sammelband nimmt die Kontroverse um den Nobelpreisträger Konrad Lorenz zum Anlass, die zeitgeschichtlichen, juristischen und hochschulpolitischen Grundlagen von akademischen Ehrungen zu untersuchen. Der komplexe Weg zur Ehrung und die biografische Selbstdarstellung der Geehrten geraten dabei ebenso in den Blick wie der weitere Umgang mit ihnen. Hierzu werden sowohl das deutsche und österreichische Ehrungsrecht vorgestellt als auch akademische Ehrungspraktiken exemplarisch analysiert. Der zeitliche Horizont der Beiträge reicht vom "Dritten Reich" bis in die Gegenwart.

Aside from the prominent perpetrators such as Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele or Klaus Barbie, there were numerous other cases of Nazis and Nazi sympathizers from Germany and Austria who ended up in Latin America after 1945. Their life trajectories, professional activities, and contacts to local elites in their new homes have hardly been subject to systematic research to date. Their new lives in Latin America, their careers e.g. as diplomats, secret service agents or scientists are therefore a main focus of this volume. The biographies of these people and their networks are woven into the larger political, social, and scientific contexts of postwar Europe and Latin America, especially in the early Cold War period.
Literary History and Popular Enlightenment in Latvian Culture
The Enlightenment of peasants, an 18th-century phenomenon that originated from an interest in common people and ideas of about the emancipation of the lower classes, had a crucial impact on creating Latvian secular literary culture. When Baltic German intellectuals, inspired by the Popular Enlightenment in German-speaking countries, undertook the task to educate Latvian peasants through books, they also laid the foundation for the future emancipation of Latvian culture. By exploring the nature of book production and changing images of peasants in Livonia and Courland in the second part of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, this book offers insights into the complex historical relationship between Latvians and Baltic Germans and the regional specifics of the Baltic Enlightenment.
