Popular culture is also well represented: "Beautiful Joe" commemorates an internationally successful novel about a dog; "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" celebrates a famous romantic ballad; "Jumbo" marks the spot where a beloved circus elephant died. The history of Ontario, like its geography and its people, is vast and varied. Whenever you drive the highways, hike the countryside, or stroll through your own neighbourhood, this book can be a guide. There is much to discover.

L'histoire de l'Ontario, tout comme sa géographie et ses habitants, est vaste et variée. Ce guide peut donc être utile, que l'on circule sur l'autoroute, se promène a la campagne ou flâne dans son propre quartier. Il reste encore tant à découvrir.
The Valley of the Trent
The Trent system of lakes, rivers, and canals occupies a considerable part of the counties of Hastings, Durham, Northumberland, Peterborough, Haliburton, and Victoria, in the province of Ontario. This volume of documents, records, and early writings covers the discovery and settlement of the valley, development and decline of the lumber trade, the Trent Canal and community life, and is abundantly illustrated in gravure and line from source materials. The Times Literary Supplement says of this first volume that is "raised high hopes of an important contribution to Canadian social and economic history." British Book News says that the "excerpts from manuscripts, newspapers, old and rare books and pamphlets, with the excellent contemporary illustrations, give a vivid and valuable account of early life in this interesting area."
Der Thoreau-Reynolds-Grat und andere stehende Kapillarwellen
Harald Berner waren bei seiner Jagd nach interessanten Wasserfotos immer wieder hübsche Muster aus kleinen parallelen Wellen aufgefallen. Sie hatten für ihn einen besonderen ästhetischen Reiz, aber erstaunlicherweise fand er im Internet keine Fotos dieses Phänomens. Er entdeckte auch keine von der einzelnen gratförmigen Linie, die man vor Hindernissen auf langsam strömendem Wasser sehen kann, und die schon der amerikanische Schriftsteller und Philosoph Henry David Thoreau vor über 160 Jahren beobachtet und in seinem Tagebuch beschrieben hatte. Harald Berner fand historische Veröffentlichungen, die diese Phänomene beschreiben und zum Teil auch erklären. Sie mussten damals ohne Bilder auskommen. Das inspirierte ihn zu diesem Büchlein. Darin zitiert er die Beschreibungen und Erklärungen aus diesen Veröffentlichungen - allerdings ohne die vielen mathematischen Formeln - und ergänzt sie mit eigenen Beobachtungen. Die Hauptsache sind aber seine Fotos, mit denen er die Betrachter zur eigenen Beobachtung dieser übersehenen Phänomene in der Natur anregen will.
