A Tree of Life: A Book from an Australian Jew to a Malawian Christian Family

My 'spiritual' son, Levison Mlambya, this book has been written for you. You have said you love to speak the word of G-D to your fellow Malawians daily. This book attempts to give a sample of the G-D's Divine Will and Wisdom, from the Torah, the Five Books of Moses. Firstly, a Torah text is given, Then an explanation by the Sages, either from Talmud, the Book of Jewish Wisdom, or from Midrash, the Book of Jewish Tradition, Folklore and Storytelling. And finally, my own summary of what I have learnt from the section. This is the way we Jews study the Torah: firstly, reading the Torah text, then commentary from the Sages, and then personal learning through discussion. Now I have not been able to include everything. It would take a book of 400 + pages to do that. But there are many ideas and stories that are probably not accessible in Malawi included here, and. I hope that you enjoy it, will find the book informative, and it will help you to spread G-D's Word.

I had the pleasure of starting a friendship with Levison Mlambya in 2016. A devout Christian, Levison kept asking about knowledge from the Torah, the Five Books of Moses. He even asked if I could send him a Torah. Sadly, my finances do not permit me to acquire a Torah for myself. However, Levison's questions inspired me to write this book. It contains Torah texts, commentary from the Sages, and what I have also learnt during arranging this volume. On reflection, I felt it might be of interest to a wider membership of the Abrahamic faiths, and so I have decided to publish it. I would welcome any commentary you might like to give. Once I was young. I did not know too much about where my family came from. My parents never talked about it very much. In their eighties, they wrote down some memories of their lives for me. As I have attained seniority myself, I have realized that my family's history is really interesting. With the wonder of the internet, I've been able to gather a lot of information that I was not able to get before. And so, I have been able to write my story. It spans the years from 1945 to 2015. I have written it in the third person. As you read, you will gain an understanding as to how John's family was influenced by world events, such as the Holocaust, and the 'Great Depression', before he was born. Yo...

What if... the Almighty was not a little old man with a white beard, waggling His finger saying: "Bad boy. Good girl?" What if the Supreme Being was a gender-neutral Sovereign instead? What if Adam was hermaphrodite, male and female joined at the side, and the Sovereign separated them to love each other with equal power? What if there were no Satan, no eternal Hellfire and damnation to fear? What if the Sovereign had put a 'temptation to do badly' in each one of that and us we were able to gain insight, express remorse, and gain the spiritual World to Come? What if this World to Come was open to all good people of all faiths, or no faith at all? What it you could enjoy all the delights of th...

Even in today's enlightened society, grief is an emotion that is frequently kept out of sight. The occasions to grieve within our lives are plentiful. There is illness, death, loss of employment, missed opportunities for promotion, divorce, intimate friends moving away, the passing of youth, children leaving home and retirement can all be cause for sadness, reflection and moving on. There are more courses about grieving now, than when I was a boy in the 1950's, but many patients come to the healing profession still not knowing how to deal with their loss. 'Give sorrow words, the grief that does not speak,Whispers the o'er fraught heart, and bids it break.'William Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act 4, Sc 3, lines 209-210, 1606The conversations that follow illustrate attempts to give sorrow words. Note the emphasis on, 1) giving patients' space to express their feelings and be heard, 2) affirmation, 3) positive reframing, and 4) prescribing tasks that encourage patients to be creative when considering their futures.

How do we become spiritual beings? What is more, what is spirituality? In this short book, I focus on a Jewish context for spirituality. For me, spirituality is the feeling of connectedness that I have with the world or other people. It is usually a pleasant feeling, one of contentment and satisfaction. It can be gained through travelling, through work, through family life and through hobbies and leisure. It does not have to be associated with religion. However, my experience of spirituality is centred on belief in G-d, and I discuss the reasons why at the end of this book. Nontheless, this book should appeal to all cultures and religions. I have tried to make it as inclusive as I possibly can. I trust that you will have happy explorations and gain some means to developing spirituality as you read it.

Moses' children Gershom and Eliezer are mentioned briefly in the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, and never heard of again. This book is my fantasy of Moses, with his sons sitting at his knees in their tent, telling them the story of the Jewish people. And so it is suitable for all children over perhaps six years of age.

My wife Joy, and I, lived for a while with our granddaughter Shira and her family. I often told Shira stories as she lay in bed before going to sleep. Shira liked the stories so much that I promised to write a book of them for her. The stories are in the form of modern fables. They cover history, emotions, morality, experiencing the world and gaining wisdom. Shira also loves my paintings so I decided to combine the two: anecdotes and artwork. The paintings are oil on canvas and span 2017-2018.

When Lewis Carroll published "Alice in Wonderland" (structured on a card game), and "Through the Looking Glass" (structured on a chess game), and James Matthew Barrie published "Peter Pan", they were presented ostensibly as "children's books. However, they proved to be so much more than this. They contained messages that were for adults on the meaning of life. "Directions is written in the same tradition. The first three sections "Vertical, Horizontal and Apex" contain the "ups and downs" of life as the heroes of the stories proceed on their journey. The fourth section "Internal", is more autobiographical, and is based on Erik Ericsson's "stages of psychological growth. I hope that readers will enjoy this method of storytelling as much as I enjoyed writing it. And of course, I have enjoyed adding my grandson Eli Leivenzon's drawings to the book.
