The John M. Arthur papers and photographs consist primarily of scrapbooks that document his career at Duquesne Light from 1967 to 1987. Local Pittsburgh newspaper clippings, annual reports, and internal news releases document the changes and developments concerning Duquesne Light during his tenure as CEO and chairman of the board. Interspersed with these business-related documents are event photographs, conference booklets, invitations, and award notifications that record his civic activities outside of his position at Duquesne Light. The personal correspondence in this collection concerns his retirement from Duquesne Light and mainly consists of greeting cards and letters addressed to Arthur. Official correspondence and reports chronicle his continued involvement with the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and the university Board of Trustees. Also included in the collection are correspondence, cards, reports, programs, awards, and a report relating to Admiral Hyman Rickover. The photographs in this collection consist of formal images of Arthur as CEO and chairman of Duquesne Light.
