Schooling Citizens

While white residents of antebellum Boston and New Haven forcefully opposed the education of black residents, their counterparts in slaveholding Baltimore did little to resist the establishment of African American schools. Such discrepancies, Hilary Moss argues, suggest that white opposition to black education was not a foregone conclusion. Through the comparative lenses of these three cities, she shows why opposition erupted where it did across the United States during the same period that gave rise to public education. As common schooling emerged in the 1830s, providing white children of all classes and ethnicities with the opportunity to become full-fledged citizens, it redefined citizens...

Mexican American Baseball in the Alamo Region

Mexican American Baseball in the Alamo Region celebrates the game as it was played in the Tejano and Tejana communities throughout Texas. This regional focus explores the importance of the game at a time when Spanish-speaking people were demanding cultural acceptance and their political and civil rights in cities like San Antonio, Corpus Christi, New Braunfels, San Diego, Kingsville, and Pleasanton. All had thriving Mexican American communities that found comfort in the game and pride in their abilities on the field. On these pages are historical images and wonderful stories that are now immortalized, taking their rightful place in the annuals of the game. ¡Viva Tejas, Viva Béisbol, y Viva los Peloteros!

Introduction to Religious Philosophy

Introduction to Religious Philosophy

This is a book with a clearly visible theme of Advaita. That is not to say, that Masih has not spoken of other things. However, this book is not an introduction to philosophy of religion, but an introduction to religious philosophy. Thus it escapes the narrow confines of being a mere introduction to religious philosophy, as there are plenty of insights on philosophy of religion as well. A striking aspect of this book is that the author not only believes, but also calculates logically, as to how the various insights of different religions must crossfertilise the visions of one another. This exercise obviously demands a great deal of understanding of the various religious commitments. The auth...

Vanity Fair (Illustrated by Charles Crombie with an Introduction by John Edwin Wells)

First published serially from 1847 to 1848, "Vanity Fair" is William Makepeace Thackeray's most famous work in which the author reflects his interest in deconstructing the notions of literary heroism of his era. It is the story of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley, who have just completed their studies at Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Young Ladies and are beginning to embark upon the world. The simple-minded nature of Amelia, who comes from a wealthy family, is contrasted with the strong-willed nature of Becky, who will stop at nothing to climb the social ranks of English society. The novel takes its name from John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," one of the most famous work of Thackeray's day, in which a town called Vanity is depicted to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things. Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, "Vanity Fair" is Thackeray's classic satire of the societal trappings of Victorian England, self described as a novel without a hero. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, includes an introduction by John Edwin Wells, and illustrations by Charles Crombie.
