Contemporary Basque Literature, edited by Jon Kortazar, brings together experts in the field to address six dimensions of the Basque literary system from 1975 to 2013: the novel, poetry, short story, children's and young adult literature, dramatic literature, and the essay. This is an innovative work about a literary system: a structure of interacting components, from writers and the themes they explore in the works they create to the edifice of publishing houses, journals, and magazines that publish, market, and distribute them, the critics and university professors that review them, and the people who read them. These products may be novels, books of short stories, poetry collections, comic books, picture books, theatrical productions, or essays. The text also addresses key related issues that are essential to understanding the multifaceted Basque literary system. These include the revival of the Basque language, so long subdued by the Franco regime, the establishment of a specifically Basque educational and media structure after 1975, and the importance of translation.
Iberian Interfaces
This book explores a key historical moment for literary and cultural relations between Spain and Portugal. Focusing on the period between 1870 and 1930, it analyses the contacts between Portuguese and Spanish writers and artists of this period, showing that, at least among the cultural elites, there were intense and fruitful dialogues across political and linguistic borders. The chapters included in this volume examine a number of modern and contemporary travel and mobility narratives produced in the different languages of Iberia, whether they offer accounts of Iberia itself or portray other geographical or human contexts. Illustrating the diversity of forms characteristic of travel writing, the texts discussed in the book feature representations of travel and mobility as presented in novels, films and other literary and cultural manifestations such as comics, plays and journalistic chronicles. Additionally, the volume incorporates a section of creative responses to the tropes of travel and mobility by contemporary Iberian authors in English translation. Thus, the book provides critical accounts of and creative insights into a tradition that has produced canonical texts, but also unorthodox, complex and challenging narratives, particularly in more recent times.

Evidential Marking in European Languages
How are evidential functions distinguished by means other than grammatical paradigms, i.e. by function words and other lexical units? And how inventories of such means can be compared across languages (against an account also of grammatical means used to mark information source)? This book presents an attempt at supplying a comparative survey of such inventories by giving detailed “evidential profiles” for a large part of European languages: Continental Germanic, English, French, Basque, Russian, Polish, Lithuanian, Modern Greek, and Ibero-Romance languages, such as Catalán, Galician, Portuguese and Spanish. Each language is treated in a separate chapter, and their profiles are based on a largely unified set of concepts based on function and/or etymological provenance. The profiles are preceded by a chapter which clarifies the theoretical premises and methodological background for the format followed in the profiles. The concluding chapter presents a synthesis of findings from these profiles, including areal biases and the formulation of methodological problems that call for further research.
