Contemporary Developments in Entrepreneurial Finance
More extensive regulations, new technologies, and new means of communication have significantly changed the financing landscape for startups and small to medium-sized companies (SMEs). This volume provides a contemporary research-based overview of the latest trends in entrepreneurial finance and outlines expected future developments. Starting with the status quo in market regulations and the financing structure of SMEs, it addresses a broad range of new financing alternatives for innovative startups (e.g. business angel financing, venture capital and corporate venture capital), as well as recent social phenomena (e.g. crowdfunding and initial coin offerings (ICOs)). Incorporating qualitative, quantitative and mixed analytical methods, the book contributes to a better understanding of the financing world by reflecting both the researcher’s and the practitioner’s perspective.
A Personality Perspective on Business Angel Syndication
The decision to syndicate investments in entrepreneurial finance has been explained through financial, networking, and resource-based perspectives. We posit that a personality perspective exists next to these three perspectives and hypothesize that the personality of business angels influences syndication behavior. Using data from 3,234 syndication decisions of 1,348 business angels, we find evidence for some of our predictions. By measuring personality through a comprehensive language analysis based on digital footprints in Twitter statements of business angels, we show that extraversion makes syndication more likely, whereas conscientiousness reduces the likelihood of syndication. Several sensitivity analyses underline the robustness of our main results. Further exploratory analyses assess the relationship between personality and syndicate composition as well as that between personality and venture success. Our study contributes to the entrepreneurial finance literature by adding and validating a new perspective to explain syndication behavior. In addition, our study contributes to research on the personality of business angels.
Entrepreneurship and Work-Life Balance
Work-life balance of entrepreneurs is a topic of high interest in both theory and practice. However, empirical findings are rare and often contradictory. This study investigates the work-life balance of different groups of self-employed in comparison to wage-employed individuals using a large European dataset. We find that work-life balance is lower for all types of self-employed in comparison to wage-employed individuals. In particular, self-employed individuals with employees have the lowest work-life balance. Our results have important implications for entrepreneurship research.
Outcomes of Entrepreneurship Education
Drawing on institutional theory and the model of entrepreneurial action, we build and test a multilevel model on the outcomes of entrepreneurship education. Essentially, we suggest that entrepreneurship education has stronger relationships with subsequent entrepreneurial activity in seemingly entrepreneurship-hostile institutional environments. Findings from 11,230 individuals in 32 countries support this notion. The results have implications for researchers and practitioners in the field of entrepreneurship education.
The Schumpeterian Entrepreneur
Innovative entrepreneurship is considered an important pillar for economic development and has sparked a lively discussion in academia and practice alike. Oftentimes, however, the debate is not sufficiently grounded on solid empirical evidence. The academic literature is growing but very scattered and is separated into several disciplines. We provide a summary that takes stock of the academic knowledge about innovative entrepreneurship and summarizes the evidence from 102 empirical studies published in the primary economics and management journals on the antecedents, behavior, and consequences of innovative entrepreneurship. Based on this state-of-the-art literature review, directions for future research are discussed.
National Culture and Modes of Entry Into Entrepreneurship
Previous research has focused on national culture as a determinant of entrepreneurship. However, little is known regarding the effect of national culture on modes of entry into entrepreneurship (starting versus taking over a business). Using a unique data set from 3,489 individuals in 34 countries, cross-level analysis shows that a country's levels of power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation influence the preferred path to entrepreneurship. We discuss implications of our findings for theory and practice.
Progress in Entrepreneurship Education and Training
The education of future entrepreneurs shapes how we will live in the future, and proper entrepreneurship education is thus of utmost importance.
