Cestovatel Josef Ladislav Erben (1888–1958) prožil většinu života v zahraničí. Ze své poslední cesty se do vlasti už nevrátil a zemřel v daleké Austrálii. Prostřednictvím bratra posílal do vlasti rukopisy článků pro české noviny a časopisy, přírodovědné i etnografické sběry pro Národní muzeum, ale také negativy pořízené na cestách. Vznikl tak jedinečný fotografický archiv, který sloužil jako zdroj ilustrací pro články, knihy i jako obrazový doprovod přednášek, které Erben při krátkých pobytech ve vlasti pořádal. Po smrti J. L.
