Financial and Monetary Integration in the New Europe
Potential new entrants to the European Union from Central and Eastern European countries face many challenges to achieve financial convergence with the existing EU nations. Using detailed case studies from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland and analysis of cross country data from these regions, Financial and Monetary Integration in the New Europe looks at the key issues for applicant countries as they negotiate the terms of their membership in the European Union. Of major concern to these countries is the financial sector and its implications for economic growth and the conduct of macroeconomic policy. The book examines, in particular, monetary and exchange rate policies, banking regulation and financial market efficiency. The overall impact of building a market driven financial system on economic development is also explored.
The Global Welfare Impact of China
This paper evaluates the global welfare impact of China's trade integration and technological change in a quantitative Ricardian-Heckscher-Ohlin model implemented on 75 countries. We simulate two alternative productivity growth scenarios: a "balanced" one in which China's productivity grows at the same rate in each sector, and an "unbalanced" one in which China's comparative disadvantage sectors catch up disproportionately faster to the world productivity frontier. Contrary to a well-known conjecture (Samuelson, 2004), the large majority of countries in the sample, including the developed ones, experience an order of magnitude larger welfare gains when China's productivity growth is biased towards its comparative disadvantage sectors. We demonstrate both analytically and quantitatively that this finding is driven by the inherently multilateral nature of world trade. As a separate but related exercise we quantify the worldwide welfare gains from China's trade integration.
Macrofinance Model of the Czech Economy
The paper developes a VAR macrofinance model of the Czech economy. It shows that yield misalignments from the yields implied by the macrofinance model partially determine subsequent yield changes over three to nine months. These yield misalignments tend to persist for a number of months. This persistence of the misalignments was explained by (a) the fact that the macro-economy influences asset markets only at lower frequencies, (b) the liquidity effect particularly during the times of capital inflows to Czech Republic, and (c) the fact that not all misalignments were greater than their historical one standard deviation.

Even if the book is based on contemporary banking practice, it arises from careful examination of the historical development of opinions on money, liquidity and monetary policy. The authors claim that money and liquidity (and the financial system as a whole) are demonstrated best through financial statements (balance sheet and income statement) which are based on accounting. Thus any operation is clarified through double-entry record. Furthermore, the fundamentals of the payment systems are outlined.

Praktická publikace o účetnictví se věnuje hlavním otázkám účtování a vykazování podle Mezinárodních standardů účetního výkaznictví. První kapitola pojednává o vývoji IFRS. Zvláštní pozornost je zaměřena na trendy v oblasti účetnictví finančních nástrojů včetně paralelního vývoje US GAAP v této oblasti. Uvedeny jsou také hlavní odlišnosti IFRS upravené právem Evropské unie a některé návrhy na změny IFRS v nejbližším období. Následující dvě kapitoly shrnují jednotlivé standardy a interpretace. Poslední kapitola obsahuje příklady aplikace IFRS včetně výpočtů, například reálných hodnot a účetních souvztažností.
