Land reform ordinance by José King of Portugal. The decree describes how the King believes that to much subdivision of large estates has led to an acceptably low level of cultivation because to much of the land was covered with walls, roads, and so on. Appealing to the public good the King declares measures for making larger areas available for cultivation. In Estremadura, those holding smaller portions of a noble estate are to give them over to the owner of the largest portions of a noble estate, after appropriate payment (it is not specified from whom). In Estremadura and other provinces any road that does not lead to a well or a bridge or a farm will be closed. In Alentejo, steps must be taken to get rid of squatters. Any trees owned by one person on another person's land need to be removed.
