Nur dem Experiment verpflichtet, nahm er bei seinen Arbeiten keine Rücksicht, ob diese auch in das allgemein anerkannte Lehrgebäude passten. Wegen seiner jüdischen Abstammung 1938 von der Universität Wien vertrieben, setzte er seine Arbeit in den USA fort. Auch dort war er ein "troublemaker". Seine experimentellen Ergebnisse blieben stets unwiderlegt, obwohl sie den Fachkollegen von Albert Einstein abwärts oft unangenehm waren. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus der Emigration entspann sich ein Intrigenspiel mit antisemitischem Beigeschmack, welches ein dunkles Kapitel der Wiener Physikgeschichte darstellt.
