Joy Unspeakable

The Question of Providence
The traditional doctrine of providence has fallen on hard times in the face of human suffering, such as that of September 11, 2001. In this clear and engaging book, Charles Wood seeks to renew reflection on doctrine of providence by reexamining features of the classical doctrine and reorienting the doctrine in a way that coheres more fully with the gospel. Woods argument moves in two directions: first, by examining recent thinking about the function of doctrine, Wood sheds light on what the doctrine of providence is supposed to do and how one might assess its adequacy. Second, Wood proposes a reorientation of the doctrine around the central Trinitarian and christological commitmentsa reorientation that moves beyond neglecting the doctrine of providence and toward a new way of understanding Gods involvement with the world.
Decolonial Theology in the North Atlantic World
This essay develops a response to the historical situation of the North Atlantic world in general and the United States in particular through theological reflection. It offers an overview of some decolonial perspectives with which theologians can engage, and argues for a general perspective for a decolonial theology as a possible response to modern/colonial structures and relations of power, particularly in the United States. Decolonial theory holds together a set of critical perspectives that seek the end of the modern/colonial world-system and not merely a democratization of its benefits. A decolonial theology, Joseph Drexler-Dreis argues, critiques how the confinement of knowledge to European traditions has closed possibilities for understanding historical encounters with divinity, and thus possibilities of critical reflection. A decolonial theology reflects critically on a historical situation in light of faith in a divine reality, the understanding of which is liberated from the monopoly of modern/colonial ways of knowing, in order to catalyze social transformation.
Thematic Threads in the Book of the Twelve
For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.
