In 2012, the Board of Trustees of Tecnológico de Monterrey established, as an institutional mandate, the strengthening of academic quality. To this end, it defined a set of strategic initiatives, among which was the development and implementation of a new educational model that would allow students, the institution, and society as a whole to face the challenges and opportunities that are envisioned for the 21st century. The team created for the design of the educational model conducted extensive literature research, consulted the various audiences served by the institution and made visits to learn about innovative experiences that could serve as a reference. This book stemmed from an initiative to recapitulate the foundations of the Tec21 Educational Model and include updates to its components that have been made since its implementation.

My career has usually been funded by grants. Here are some of the proposals I wrote at the University of Colorado and at Drexel University. Successful grant proposals are tricky to write. The ones reproduced here might provide helpful examples. They may also provide explicit statements of some of the goals of my research over the years.

En 2012, el Consejo Directivo del Tecnológico de Monterrey estableció, como mandato institucional, el fortalecimiento de la calidad académica. Para lograrlo definió un conjunto de iniciativas estratégicas entre las que se encontró el desarrollo e implementación de un nuevo modelo educativo que permitiera a los estudiantes, a la institución y a la sociedad en su conjunto, enfrentar los retos y las oportunidades que se vislumbran para el siglo 21. El equipo conformado para el diseño del modelo educativo realizó una búsqueda intensiva en la literatura, consultó a los diversos públicos a los que atiende la institución y realizó visitas para conocer experiencias innovadoras que pudieran servir como referencia. Su implementación en pleno sucedió en agosto de 2019 cuando ingresó la primera generación de estudiantes con planes de estudio diseñados totalmente bajo las directrices del Modelo Educativo Tec21. Este libro surge como iniciativa para recapitular los fundamentos del Modelo Educativo Tec21 y describir las actualizaciones que han tenido sus componentes desde su implementación.
