Here are the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Algorithms in Bioinformatics, WABI 2006, held in the course of the ALGO 2006 conference meetings. The book presents 36 revised full papers addressing all current issues of algorithms in bioinformatics, from mathematical tools to experimental studies of approximation algorithms and reports on significant computational analyses. For the first time, coverage extends to machine-learning approaches along with combinatorial optimization.

Systems, Relations, and the Structures of International Societies
Inspired by recent work in evolutionary, developmental, and systems biology, Systems, Relations, and the Structures of International Societies sketches a robust conception of systems that grounds a new conception of levels (of organization, not merely analysis). Understanding international systems as multi-level multi-actor complex adaptive systems allows explanations of important features of the world that are inaccessible to dominant causal and rationalist explanatory strategies. It also develops a comprehensive critique of IR's dominant conception of systems and structures (narrow, rigid, and unfruitful); presents a novel conception of the interrelationship of the social production of continuities and the social production of change; and sketches models of spatio-political structure that cast new light on the development of international systems, including a distinctive account of the nature of globalization.
Peptide Receptors, Part I
During the last few years, the pace of research in the field of neuropeptide receptors has increased steadily: new neuropeptides were discovered, and the classification of receptor subtypes has been refined. It thus appeared essential to update the information. Peptide Receptors Part I summarizes current knowledge on ten distinct peptide families. This volume integrates photomontages and maps of quantitative receptor autoradiography, in situ hybridization histochemistry, and immunocytochemistry images. Application of these classical techniques and of new approaches such as transgenic and knock-out animals has revealed a distinct species and tissue specific variation in receptor subtypes expression and pharmacology in the mammalian central nervous system. The functional role of neuropeptides and their receptors in the CNS has been investigated thanks to the development of potent and selective receptor antagonists and agonists. The development of specific neuropeptide-related molecules will help to get a better understanding of receptor subtype physiology and neuronal distribution and may lead to innovative treatments in a variety of brain disorders.
