Curated by Juan Antonio Alvarez Reyes, the event is designed as a global project including the exhibition itself, a video programme, a variety of performances and concerts, and a series of films, all of which aim to showcase the work of approximately 30 creators (visual artists, film directors and musicians) who use video games as a primary material to demonstrate how it is just as natural to modify games as play with them. The exhibition will comprise installations, mono-channel videos and interactive video games, which will enable viewers to gain an insight into a selection of these works based on the concepts of simulation, violence and risk. All themes that form part of the essence of this genre, here they are examined in relation to different theories and from the varying perspectives of the participating artists.

Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia

  • Categories: Art

Combining postcolonial studies, curating and contemporary art, this book surveys the role played by artistic curatorship and contemporary art museums in the shaping of identities and cultural planning in contemporary Iberia. The book’s main hypothesis is that contemporary art has been pivotal in the construction of contemporary Iberia, a process marked by the attention paid (in heterogeneous, not always satisfactory ways) to the entanglement of the legacies of colonialism and the present-day status of Iberian territories as cosmopolitan societies now integrated in the European Union. We argue that, at least from the 1990s, curating emerged as a key activity for Iberian societies to display and configure an image of themselves as modern and fully integrated in the European cultural landscape. Such an image, however, had to cope with the legacies of colonialism and the profound socioeconomic transformations of these societies. This book is concerned with bringing together, while redefining and expanding, Iberian and curatorial studies.

"Lee was born in Seoul, Korea. She graduated from Ewha Women's University with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Voice in 1985. Lee moved to New Zealand in 1993 and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Intermedia at Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland in 2002. As an inter-media artist she works across digital, sculptural and performance platforms. Through the creation and development of animated character TOKI, Lee discusses the changing roles of women, in particular Asian women, focusing on the rise of new technology and contemporary mythmaking, which in turn leads to a heightened interest in Western consumerism and beauty ideals. She currently works in Seoul, New York and Auckland"--Gow Langsford Gallery, Auckland, NZ.
