From pinstripe to houndstooth, ikat to toile, join Pepper on her journey into the history of textiles as she works alongside a tailor to make her perfect dress. Pepper is getting a dress made for a special occasion. It's the first dress that has ever been made just for her, and she wants it to be perfect. But what pattern is right for her? Pepper is particular, and nothing works at first. Dotted Swiss? Too plain. Houndstooth? Not enough color. Pinstripe? Too glum. As Pepper learns about each fabric, she finds a reason why it's just not the one. Will Pepper ever be able to find the perfect pattern? Julie Kraulis takes readers on a journey through gorgeous patterns and their origins--from the mountains of Switzerland to the green grass of Scotland--in search of Pepper's ideal pattern. The incredible illustrations make for a dress, a character and a book that are impossible to forget.

Anxiety

The most common mental health problem facing Canadian children today is anxiety. It’'s easy to dismiss the emotional, psychological, and physical effects of anxiety in children as being ''all in their heads'' -- but doing so can have a profoundly negative impact on a child'’s development: socially, academically, and emotionally. This accessible, illustrated book helps all kids understand anxiety better and offers practical ideas for coping. Filled with information, quizzes, definitions, and helpful hints, Deal With It: Anxiety helps young people identify and deal with the many different ways that anxiety is expressed, from phobias to panic attacks, in settings as diverse as home, the schoolyard, and the mall. It offers insight to everyone -- to the child experiencing anxiety, to someone who doubts the problem is real, and to a young person who witnesses another’'s problem. This book adds an important new topic to the Deal With It series'' approachable and non-threatening approach to different forms of conflict in the lives of young people.

This enriched reference guide offers a unique overview of more than 200 picture books published by Canadian publishing houses between 2017–2019. The authors cover key themes in contemporary Canadian titles that match broad curriculum trends in education. Response activities are included in the text, for example frameworks for critical literacy discussions, along with annotated bibliographies that specifically recognize titles by Indigenous authors and illustrators. The book also contains original interviews with a dozen rising stars in Canadian writing and book illustration. While the book is specifically geared for educators, it also supports public libraries, Education researchers, and future picture book creators, as well as families who are interested in learning more about reading development and related literacy activities for the home setting.
