Kenehuru was a high born Maori woman who was given to Edward Meurant by the Rangatira of the Ngati Mahuta. The biography traces her life from Kawhia on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand to the newly established capital of New Zealand, Auckland. There she bridged two cultures - Maori and Pakeha. In 1844, Kenehuru was given valuable land in Auckland by her relatives, Chiefs of the Ngati Whatua. Sir George Grey and his Government brazenly took much of this land and put it up for sale. Edward Meurant and Kenehuru then began a legal battle to regain this land. In 1875, Judge Fenton ruled that Kenehuru had been wrongfully treated but it took a further four years before the New Zeal...

Child Protection

The National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW) is the first nationally representative study of children who have been reported to authorities as suspected victims of abuse or neglect and the public programs that protect them. Child Protection is the first book that reports the results of NSCAW, interprets the findings, and puts them into a broader policy context. The authors, all experts in child welfare issues, address a range of issues made apparent by the survey results, including which types of personal and familial problems the programs are meant to address, the range of services and interventions that the child protection system can make available, and an assessment of these programs. Each chapter discusses the survey's implications and suggests new alternatives for designing and implementing future programs that not only protect at-risk children from further harm but also provide them with security and support. The practical lessons included in this volume make it an essential reference for all professionals working in the child protection field as well as anyone studying in the field of child welfare.

Born in France in 1765, Ferdinand Meurant became a skilled jeweller and goldsmith. In Ireland in the late 1790's, he and John Austen, an Engraver, forged a large number of Irish Bank Notes. On discovery of their crime they were sentenced to Life Imprisonment which was commuted to Transportation for Life to the Colony of New South Wales. His trade allowed him to be one of Sydney's first two jewellers and enabled him to fast-track his way to freedom. The jewellery he made for Mrs Josepha King, the wife of the Governor, caused claims of outrage and resulted in two men being sent to prison on Norfolk Island. Ferdinand Meurant abandoned his wife and two sons in Ireland: in the Colony of New South Wales, his assigned servant, sixteen year old Mary Pritchard, became his common-law-wife. At the age of forty-six, he married fifteen year old Rosetta Martin. He lived in the Sydney region from 1800 to 1844 and for the last twenty years of his life, he was a farmer at Prospect.

Pitbull was born to Cuban parents who made him recite the works of poet José Martí. He encountered problems early in his career as a rapper because he was blue-eyed, white and Cuban American. He was also influenced by the Miami bass genre of hip hop music and has cited Celia Cruz and Willy Chirino as sources of inspiration for his music.

Learning to Liberate

Few problems in education are as pressing as the severe crisis in urban schools. Though educators have tried a wide range of remedies, dismal results persist. This is especially true for low-income youth of color, who drop out of school—and into incarceration—at extremely high rates. The dual calamity of underachievement in schools and violence in many communities across the country is often met with blame and cynicism, and with a host of hurtful and unproductive quick fixes: blaming educators, pitting schools against each other, turning solely to the private sector, and ratcheting up the pressure on teachers and students. But real change will not be possible until we shift our focus fro...
