Death By Design

Over the past seventy-five years, the Japanese government has refused to apologize to the United States government for decimating Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941. But while most Americans, now three generations hence, know little about that tragedy, not all, especially the aging veterans, have forgotten. Their just due is in this book. And so, as a Canadian who has studied that slice of American history rather extensively, as well as the historically murderous mindset of the Japanese military, and particularly though a foreign spirited American disciple, I felt it incumbent upon me to make right that wrong committed against America's very soul. The American president of that era, FDR, said that "There shall be no more days of infamy." To memorialize those words for all time, it became imperative to give them both a greater weight than they have ever had, and a warning to any other State so inclined that the soul of America is fully resurrected to where any such future intent, potential or actual, will be unapologetically met with its "Death by Design."

The Philosophical Roots of the Ecological Crisis

The Philosophical Roots of the Ecological Crisis: Descartes and the Modern Worldview traces the conceptual sources of the present environmental degradation within the worldview of Modernity, and particularly within the thought of René Descartes, universally acclaimed as the father of modern philosophy. The book demonstrates how the triple foundations of the Modern worldview – in terms of an exaggerated anthropocentrism, a mechanistic conception of the natural world, and the metaphysical dualism between humanity and the rest of the physical world – can all be largely traced back to Cartesian thought, with direct ecological consequences.

Improvised Continent

How does a country in the process of becoming a world power prepare its citizens for the responsibilities of global leadership? In Improvised Continent, Richard Cándida Smith answers this question by illuminating the forgotten story of how, over the course of the twentieth century, cultural exchange programs, some run by the government and others by philanthropies and major cultural institutions, brought many of the most important artists and writers of Latin America to live and work in the United States. Improvised Continent is the first book to focus on cultural exchange inside the United States and how Americans responded to Latin American writers and artists. Moving masterfully between ...

Economic Growth and Democracy in Post-Colonial Africa

In Economic Growth and Democracy in Post-Colonial Africa: Cabo Verde, Small States, and the World Economy, edited by João Resende-Santos and Aminah Fernandes Pilgrim, the contributors provide a comprehensive academic analysis of the political economy of Cabo Verde (Cabo Verde) from its independence in 1975 to the present. Democracy and economic growth have been in short supply in post-colonial Africa. Yet the widespread misperception of this vast and diverse continent as experiencing only failure has overshadowed cases of good governance, human development, and social peace. This volume offers a comprehensive analytical narrative on how Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) forged a nation and navigated ...

The Mathematical Works of Leon Battista Alberti

The Mathematical Works of Leon Battista Alberti

Leon Battista Alberti was an outstanding polymath of the fifteenth century, alongside Piero della Francesca and before Leonardo da Vinci. While his contributions to architecture and the visual arts are well known and available in good English editions, and much of his literary and social writings are also available in English, his mathematical works are not well represented in readily available, accessible English editions have remained accessible only to specialists. The four treatises included here – Ludi matematici, De Componendis Cifris, Elementi di pittura and De lunularum quadratura – are extremely valuable in rounding out the portrait of this multitalented thinker. The treatises are presented in modern English translations, with commentary that is intended to make evident the depths of Alberti’s knowledge as well as address the treatises’ mathematical, historical and cultural context, their classical Greek roots, and their relationship to later works by Renaissance thinkers.
