The main argument of the book is that the globalisation of lives is experienced by people as the 'extension' of their 'milieux' both spatially and symbolically.
Multicultures and Cities
In the planning of city development, it is important that different groups should be able to live in peaceful coexistence. This is how the concept 'multicultural' came about. During the 1970s, multiculturalism was developed into a model of political democracy-a strategy for society's rapid change. The term multiculturalism suggests that contemporary urban cultures somehow co-exist in a condition of mutual respect and possible equality. The new multiculturalism seems very different from the migration that took place in the 1960s and 1970s. The essays in this collection address the general themes of ethnicity and contemporary European urbanism in many different ways, examining a wide variety of cities and city pairings. Countering Violent Extremism
This book presents original research on gender and the power dynamics of diverse forms of violent extremism, and efforts to counter them. Based on focus group and interview research with some 250 participants in Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands and UK in 2015 and 2016, it offers insights from communities affected by radicalisation and violent extremism. It introduces the concept of gendered radicalisation, exploring how the multiple factors of paths to violent extremist groups – social, local, individual and global – can differ for both men and women, and why. The book also offers a critical analysis of gender and terrorism; a summary of current policy in the five countries of study and some of the core gendered assumptions prevalent in interventions to prevent violent extremism; a comparison of Jihadi extremism and the far right; and a chapter of recommendations.
