Resilience and Regional Dynamics
Economic and financial crises have brought the rise of unemployment, reduction of economic growth and emergence of global imbalances and tensions as countries and regions have suffered the effects of a variety of internal and external shocks. In this context of constant disruption, the scientific community has struggled to provide satisfactory answers to current economic challenges within standard frameworks. Focusing on the interconnections between innovation and resilience, this edited book contributes to a better understanding of how the crisis affects innovation and the capacity of territories to adapt and evolve. It offers both theoretical and empirical contributions that debate the notions of resilience in regional and urban contexts and serve as case studies related to innovation strategies and territorial clusters.
Federalism and Social Policy
Federalism and Social Policy focuses on the crucial question: Is a strong and egalitarian welfare state compatible with federalism? In this carefully curated collection, Scott L. Greer, Heather Elliott, and the contributors explore the relationship between decentralization and the welfare state to determine whether or not decentralization has negative consequences for welfare. The contributors examine a variety of federal countries, including Spain, Canada, and the United Kingdom, asking four key questions related to decentralization: (1) Are there regional welfare states (such as Scotland, Minnesota, etc.)? (2) How much variation is there in the structures of federal welfare states? (3) Is federalism bad for welfare? (4) Does austerity recentralize or decentralize welfare states? By focusing on money and policy instead of law and constitutional politics, the volume shows that federalism shapes regional governments and policies even when decentralization exists.
Social Capital in Organizations
As recently as one generation ago, the term organization was synonymous with stasis, reliability, hierarchy and disciplined productivity. The new guiding principles of management practise, meanwhile, are dynamism, flexibility, teams and emancipated interactivity. The new key term “network” has summed up these contemporary organizational trends. This study suggests the interpretation of networks as social capital of individuals and organizations. This understanding requires a theoretical and methodological refocusing on the actions of the organization’s members. The present study places a variant of action theory – socioeconomic exchange theory – centre stage, fuses this theory with the toolkit of social network analysis and puts the resulting synthesis to the test by examining cooperation among equal members of an organization.
ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSES AND RESOURCE USE IN COASTAL URBAN AND PERI-URBAN REGIONS
This book is one of the outputs from the EU FP7 research project SECOA, Solutions for Environmental Contrasts in Coastal Areas, working in the period December 20019 – 1 December 2013. In the project participated five countries from EU and three partners are from outside Europe. The main goals of the project were to analyze conflicts on resource use in urban, coastal areas with special emphasis on urbanization and mobility and in the context of global environmental changes. One of the work packages in the project was dedicated to work on Environmental stresses on the natural resources in the urban coastal context. The work package on Environmental stresses and resource use for sustainable development was led by Dr Tran Dinh Lan. Specific studies on this theme was performed by the partners as 17 case studies, two (one country had three) per country, which yielded a large data set presented in this volume. The case studies were all first written as national reports and were also compiled in a project deliverable, D2.2.
Reforming the Common Fisheries Policy
This book takes a critical view of the policy and law governing EU marine fisheries and the effect of the 2013 reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Reforms to the CFP are impeded by Treaty-guaranteed concessions, exemptions from general environmental legislation and the Court of Justice’s creation of principles unique to the sector. The author discusses how damaging effects of fishing could be ameliorated if the Court were to align fisheries principles with general principles of law, and considers the institutional and regulatory frameworks needed to encourage prudent resource use.

German Annual of Spatial Research and Policy 2010
Resilience is increasingly becoming a catchword in current discussions about urban and regional development. While there has been a strong research focus on sustainability, there is a lack of understanding of the processes and factors that make cities and regions more vulnerable and others more resilient, for example, when dealing with climate change, demographic decline and ageing, as well as economic crises. The German Annual of Spatial Research and Policy 2010 sheds some light on this by discussing examples of how actors deal with change. On the one hand, concepts are described and analysed which are oriented towards increasing urban regional resilience, for example regarding energy consumption, climate change, and urban decline. Moreover, institutional aspects are discussed. On the other hand, barriers for using the concept of resilience in planning are described and suggestions are made about how to deal with these barriers in strategic planning.
Human - Wildlife Conflicts in Europe

Sustainability in the Coastal Urban Environment
The process of globalization has been in the focus for much discussion and debate over its benefits and downsides. Globalisation has helped to raise productivity and employment; lift millions out of poverty; revolutionised communications; boosted international cooperation; fostered competition; boosted global economic growth and interdependencies through trade and FDI flows; and facilitated scientific discoveries (Gurria, 2007). However, at the same time, globalization is also blamed for a growing uncertainty and insecurity in the job market; depressed wages; increasing inequality; overexploitation of irreplaceable natural resources; the transfer of political power to large multinationals operating outside of the democratic processes; and the sacrifice of cultural and other values to the dictates of the marketplace.
