Brewing Microbiology

During the latter part of the last century and the early years of this century, the microbiology of beer and the brewing process played a central role in the development of modern microbiology. An important advance was Hansen's development of pure culture yeasts for brewery fermentations and the recognition of different species of brewing and wild yeasts. The discovery by Winge of the life cycles of yeasts and the possibilities of hybridization were among the first steps in yeast genetics with subsequent far-reaching consequences. Over the same period the contaminant bacteria of the fermentation industries were also studied, largely influenced by Shimwell's pioneering research and resulting ...

The Molecular Biology of Poliovirus

Years ago when we were asked to write a book on the present-day knowledge of the molecular biology of poliovirus, we did not expect that such an apparently simple task could involve so much time and effort. Our writing was hampered by the fact that both of us are full time "workers", so that this monograph is mainly a spare time expedience. The main attention of this book focuses on a detailed review of the molecular biology of poliovirus and especially on the advances of the last decade; medical and environmental aspects are only briefly mentioned. Observations from older studies are considered in view of more recent information. Some of the older ob servations provided fundamental insights...

Brewing Microbiology

Much has happened in the brewing industry since the last edition of this book was published in 1996. In particular, there has been substantial con solidation of larger brewing companies as major multinational concerns, and at the other end of the spectrum the microbrewing scene in various parts of the world has become established as a sustainable enterprise. For those involved in the scientific and technical aspects of fermented bever age production the changes have been no less daunting. The complete genome sequence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been determined and studies are underway in numerous laboratories throughout the world to unravel the expression of the genome (transcriptomics a...

Progress in Virus Research

Progress in Virus Research

The first part of the book deals with several aspects of different viruses : viral structure, function, replication and interplay between the virus and the host. Six viruses are used as examples, four RNA viruses (HTLV-I, HIV-1, MMTV and coxsackievirus B4) and two DNA viruses (EBV and KSHV). The second part of the book is devoted to the use of the knowledge on viruses to practical applications and also to the characterisation of HIV inhibitors. Reviewing the results of research on different viruses is important since, although viruses possess vast degrees of complexity, they also share similar features. In addition, viruses are more and more used as models to solve molecular biology problems.

The Eradication of Infectious Diseases

The Eradication of Infectious Diseases

In 1993, an International Task Force for Disease Eradication evaluated over 80 potential candidate diseases and made recommendations. However, little has been done to develop the science of eradication systematically. This book reports the findings of a multidisciplinary workshop on the eradication of infectious diseases. It reviews the history of eradication efforts and lessons from previous campaigns and distinguishes among eradication, elimination, and control programs and extinction of an etiologic agent. It addresses a wide range of related issues, including biological and socio-political criteria for eradication, costs and benefits of eradication campaigns, opportunities for strengthening primary health care in the course of eradication efforts, and other aspects of planning and implementing eradication programs. Finally, it stresses the importance of global mechanisms for formulating and implementing such programs.

New Developments in Diagnostic Virology

The contributions to this book derived from the Seventh Munich Symposium on Microbiology on June 3 and 4, 1981, which was organized by the WHO Centre for Collection and Evaluation of Data on Comparative Virology at the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Infectious and Epidemic Diseases, University of Munich, Federal Repub lic of Germany. One of our principal purposes was to establish a forum at which the comparative aspects of questions of current interest in the field of medical virology could be discussed. In addition to the presentation of recent fmdings in microbiology, our overall aim was to crystallize trends and indicate new directions for future research activities. This book is a to...
