The Post/Colonial Museum
The African museum landscape is changing. A new generation of scholars and curators is setting international standards for the reappraisal and revision of colonial collections, the conception of curatorial spaces, and the integration of new groups of actors. In the face of the ghostly survival of colonial epistemologies in archives, displays, and architectures, it is a matter of breaking up institutional encrustations and infrastructures, inventing new museum practices, and bringing archives to life. Scholars and museum experts predominantly working in Africa and South America discuss the post/colonial history of museums, their political-economic entanglements, the significance of diasporic objects, as well as the prospects for restitution and its consequences. The contributions to this issue of ZfK are all presented in English. Based on the works of Waverly Duck and Anne Rawls, the debate section is devoted to forms of everyday racism and the way interaction orders of race are institutionalized.

Heloise ist die Tochter einer exzentrischen Französin und eines Afrikaners. Parisette, die sich illegal eine Rente für Kriegerwitwen verschaffen will, wird bei der Auszahlungen von einem hohen Militär vergewaltigt und schlägt ihn zusammen. Um sich zu rächen, setzt dieser das väterliche Anwesen in Brand, unmittelbar, bevor die beiden Halbschwestern dort endlich mit ihrem Vater zusammentreffen sollen. Die Villa fliegt mit dem Brandstifter in die Luft - der Vater, ein Oppositioneller, hatte dort ein großes Waffenarsenal gelagert. Er erscheint gerade noch rechtzeitig um die Schwestern zu retten und nun endlich erzählt er Heloise seine Geschichte. Rasant erzählt und spannend bis zum Schluss ist Cola Cola Jazz ein Buch über Gewalt, Sexualität und die Möglichkeit und Unmöglichkeit von Liebe.
Of Worlds and Artworks
The present volume brings together contributions which explore artworks – including literature, visual arts, film and performances – as dynamic sites of worlding. It puts emphasis on the processes of creating or doing worlds, implying movement as opposed to the boundary drawing of area studies. From such a processual perspective, Africa is not a delineated area, but emerges in a variety of relations which can reach across the continent, but also the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic or Europe. Bringing together in English translation eleven Francophone African plays dating from 1970 to 2021, this essential collection includes satirical portraits of colonizers and their collaborators (Bernard Dadié’s Béatrice du Congo; Sony Labou Tansi’s I, Undersigned, Cardiac Case; Sénouvo Agbota Zinsou’s We’re Just Playing) alongside contemporary works questioning diasporic identity and cultural connections (Koffi Kwahulé’s SAMO: A Tribute to Basquiat and Penda Diouf’s Tracks, Trails, and Traces...). The anthology memorializes the Rwandan genocide (Yolande Mukagasana’s testimony from Rwanda 94), questions the status of women in entrenched patriarchy (Werewere Liking’s Singuè Mura: Given That a Woman...), and follows the life of Elizabeth Nietzsche, who perverted her brother’s thought to colonize Paraguay (José Pliya’s The Sister of Zarathustra). Gustave Akakpo’s The True Story of Little Red Riding Hood and Kossi Éfoui’s The Conference of the Dogs offer parables about what makes life livable, while Kangni Alem’s The Landing shows the dangers of believing in a better life, through migration, outside of Africa.
