The Meaning of Media

The book highlights aspects of mediality and materiality in the dissemination and distribution of texts in the Scandinavian Middle Ages important for achieving a general understanding of the emerging literate culture. In nine chapters various types of texts represented in different media and in a range of materials are treated. The topics include two chapters on epigraphy, on lead amulets and stone monuments inscribed with runes and Roman letters. In four chapters aspects of the manuscript culture is discussed, the role of authorship and of the dissemination of Christian topics in translations. The appropriation of a Latin book culture in the vernaculars is treated as well as the adminstrative use of writing in charters. In the two final chapters topics related to the emerging print culture in early post-medieval manuscripts and prints are discussed with a focus on reception. The range of topics will make the book relevant for scholars from all fields of medieval research as well as those interested in mediality and materiality in general.

Variance characterises the textual culture of the Middle Ages on all levels. Analysing this variance is paramount to understand the norms and transformations involved in the process of establishing a literate culture. This series focuses on the literate output in the Nordic region, from the perspective of Modes of Modification. Mnemonic Echoing in Old Norse Sagas and Eddas

This book brings together Old Norse-Icelandic literature and critical strategies of memory, and argues that some of the particularities of this vernacular textual tradition are explained by the fact that this literature derives from, represents, and incorporates into its designs mnemonic devices of different kinds. Even if Old Norse-Icelandic manuscript culture is relatively silent about the mnemonic context of the literature, the texts themselves exhibit multiple reminiscences of memory. By showing that this literature reveals glimpses of mnemonic technologies at the same time as it testifies to a cultural memory, this study demonstrates how ‘the past’, and narrative traditions about th...

In the autumn of 2015 the Old Norse milieu at the University of Oslo organised a series of lectures on thirteenth century encyclopaedia followed by a conference treating the well-known work Konungs skuggsjá with references to European Mirrors of Princes and encyclopaedic literature. Already at the outset we planned to make a volume combining the lectures and the papers from the series and the conference. We have, however, subsequently also asked new authors to contribute to the volume in order to further illuminate the relation between contemporary Western European traditions and the Konungs skuggsjá. The book is the result of a project where all the articles have been carefully edited in ...

Jews in East Norse Literature

What did Danes and Swedes in the Middle Ages imagine and write about Jews and Judaism? This book draws on over 100 medieval Danish and Swedish manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art (c. 1200-1515) to answer this question. There were no resident Jews in Scandinavia before the modern period, yet as this book shows ideas and fantasies about them appear to have been widespread and an integral part of life and culture in the medieval North. Volume 1 investigates the possibility of encounters between Scandinavians and Jews, the terminology used to write about Jews, Judaism, and Hebrew, and how Christian writers imagined the Jewish body. The (mis)use of Jews in d...
