The powerful colouration of Expressionism is the leitmotif of the paintings of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976). The museums of the city of Chemnitz boast more than 60 of his works. The graphic oeuvre of this founding member of the artist group Die Brücke is comprised of more than 400 works. Schmidt-Rottluff worked with great skill in the fields of sculpture, drawing and prints (especially woodcuts). This comprehensive volume presents an annotated catalogue of the holdings in Chemnitz.
During the early-20th century the leaders of the German Expressionism were also the greatest European printmakers of their day. This catalogue discusses and illustrates over 200 prints and 44 printed books, and includes the work of artists such as Bruecke, Kirchner and Heckel.
