Ergene (U. of Vermont) examines the practice of law in Ottoman Anatolia, during the period, focusing on the judicial operations of local Islamic courts and the processes of dispute resolution as recorded in the court registers of the two north subprovinces named. He is not concerned with local history of the two provincial centers, or how the peopled lived and died, but concentrates on the relationship between the courts and the people, and on understanding the place of Islamic courts in Ottoman provincial life.
