Die AutorInnen geben Einblicke in die vielfältigen medien- und genrespezifischen Umsetzungen der Konstruktion, Perpetuierung und Infragestellung von Geschlechterkonzeptionen in audiovisuellen Medien. Dabei betrachten sie das Zusammenspiel der verschiedenen Ebenen, in denen das »gendering« in diesen Medien angesiedelt ist, und nehmen einem zentralen Ansatz des Bandes folgend eine transmediale Perspektive ein.Das Buch soll durch eingehende Analysen populärer Beispiele aus TV-Serien, Filmen und Musikvideos den Blick der LeserInnen schärfen, wie audiovisuelle Medien auf der einen Seite das Bild von »Weiblichkeit« und »Männlichkeit« beeinflussen und auf der anderen Seite gesellschaftlich verankerte Geschlechternormen reproduzieren.

Unravelling Migrants as Transnational Agents of Development
Since the early 2000s, there has been an increased interest in international migration as a central mechanism to advance what is called the development potential of international migrants. The contributions in this book argue that the current enthusiasm about the migration-development nexus should be approached from a perspective that recognizes and critically appraises the emergence of a new agent in development discourse, variably called "migrants," "diaspora," or "transnational community." The essays, which are the result of intensive student research at Bielefeld University, depart from issues raised by the migration-development nexus and ask how life-worlds and institutions are changing in the face of cross-border processes. Rushing Into Floods
The dramatic representation of maritime spaces, characters and plots in Restoration and early eighteenth-century English theatres served as a crucial discursive negotiation of a burgeoning empire. This study focuses on staging the sea in a period of growing maritime, commercial and colonial activity, a time when the prominence of the sea and shipping was firmly established in the very fabric of English life. As theatres were re-established after the Restoration, playhouses soon became very visible spaces of cultural activity and important locales for staging cultural contact and conflict. Plays staging the sea can be read as central in representing the budding maritime empire to metropolitan audiences, as well as negotiating political power and knowledge about the other. The study explores well-known plays by authors such as Aphra Behn and William Wycherley alongside a host of more obscure plays by authors such as Edward Ravenscroft and Charles Gildon as cultural performances for negotiating cultural identity and difference in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Animated Mischief
Over the last century, the medium of animation has served as an expression of childhood as well as a method of subverting the expectations of what society has promised for the future. Separated into three parts, this work assembles various explorations of taste, culture and passion through animation. Section I features essays that outline the historical changes in art and society that gave rise to an outsider culture that found a home in animation. In the second section, essays examine the practical use of animation as a voice for the underserved. Finally, in Section III, essays analyze the ways in which animation has reshaped the acceptance of outsider status to embrace otherness. Julia Apitzsch examines the thematic and aesthetic function of the visual representation of history and cultural reality in DeLillo's novels. DeLillo's portrayals of key events in American history are violent and traumatic. Their visualisation has burned them into the American collective memory. DeLillo critically examines the mechanisms of power and significance of images and sounds out the various possibilities of creatively reclaiming control through language, by translating the flood of images into literary motifs. Especially traumatic events such as the terrorist attacks of 11th September, which generated an overwhelming torrent of images, show that as an interpreter of images, the author is more important than ever.
