Performing Identities and Utopias of Belonging

Performing Identities and Utopias of Belonging consists of sixteen essays, reflecting the current conflicted debate on the ontology, constructiveness and affect of categories of ascribed social identity such as gender, ethnicity, race and nation, in the context of British, Irish and North American cultural landscapes. They address the many ways in which these communities of belonging are imagined, iterated, performed, questioned, and deconstructed in literature, cinema and visual culture; they also support or counter claims about the enhanced value of social identity in the expression of the self in the light of the present debates that surround the contested post-identity turn in cultural s...

The Perennial Satirist

This collection of essays primarily honours Bernfried Nugel the teacher and scholar, but it also pays homage to Bernfried Nugel the indefatigable worker in the cause of Aldous Huxley studies. It is due to this latter manifestation that many of the contributors to this volume know each other personally, having met at one or more of the international conferences that Professor Nugel organized and either hosted or co-hosted. At Munster, his home university, he has also been instrumental in establishing and heading a center for admirers of Huxley's work, along with a fine library of Huxley materials, including manuscripts and numerous first editions. Handbook Transdisciplinary Learning

What is transdisciplinarity - and what are its methods? How does a living lab work? What is the purpose of citizen science, student-organized teaching and cooperative education? This handbook unpacks key terms and concepts to describe the range of transdisciplinary learning in the context of academic education. Transdisciplinary learning turns out to be a comprehensive innovation process in response to the major global challenges such as climate change, urbanization or migration. A reference work for students, lecturers, scientists, and anyone wanting to understand the profound changes in higher education.

Aldous Huxley and Self-Realization

Throughout his writing career, and especially in the last thirty years of his life, Aldous Huxley exhibited a deep interest in human potentialities, which he often described as our greatest unused natural resource. The present volume is the first book to focus on this Huxleyan core concern. It is based on presentations given at the Sixth International Aldous Huxley Symposium held in 2017 at the University of Almería (Spain). This volume collects essays by eleven scholars from eight countries that discuss Huxley's concept of human potentialities from an interdisciplinary perspective. This is another innovative feature of this book, since today Huxley is mainly remembered as a novelist, altho...

L2 Spanish and Italian intonation

The main aim of this book is to contribute to our understanding of the acquisition of second language intonation, by comparing Czech learners of Spanish with German learners of Spanish and Czech learners of Italian. By means of a large production database, the study seeks to uncover how L1-to-L2 intonational transfer works and what role prosodic (dis)similarities between languages play. Contrary to most previous research, the work presents an original multidirectional cross-linguistic comparison and examines different types of sentence, such as neutral and non-neutral statements, yes/no questions, wh-questions, exclamatives and vocatives. The findings reveal positive and negative transfer fr...

Volume 22 opens with two little-known Huxley writings, "A Lunndon Mountaineering Essay" (1914), edited by Gerhard Wagner, and Huxley's contributions in French at the Paris 1933 congress on the future of the European spirit, edited and translated into English by James Sexton. This section is followed by a further selection of papers from the Seventh International Aldous Huxley Symposium held at Toulon in October 2021, many of them devoted to a variety of neglected Huxley issues or to the second part of the Huxley Forum, entitled "Aldous Huxley's Controversial Philosophical Theories." An overview of the conference programme can be consulted on the Internet via https://sites.univ-tln.fr/huxley-toulon/en/program/. The volume closes with further articles on Huxley's concept of the ultimate revolution, on an aficionado's life-long personal experience with Huxley's works, and on Huxley's many-sided response to Charles Dickens.

Aldous Huxley Annual

Volume 19 is dedicated to the memory of Prof Lothar Fietz (University of Tübingen) in appreciation of his merits as an outstanding Huxley scholar, as a Founding Member and Curator of the Aldous Huxley Society and as a true friend (see the In Memoriam above). The volume opens with a sequence of hitherto unpublished Huxley writings, starting with the three extant versions from 1949 of his dramatization of Ape and Essence (1948), thematically linked with two texts treating the physical survival of mankind and three contrasting texts discussing the question of spiritual survival. This section is followed by Huxley's draft for an introduction of Edna St. Vincent Millay at one of her poetry readings in 1938 and an autograph letter to Seabury Edwardes that he wrote shortly after the publication of The Doors of Perception (1954). The volume closes with several critical articles on Huxley's relationship with D. T. Suzuki, his Sanary period and his view and practice of literary utopias.

The Position of the German Language in the World focuses on the global position of German and the factors which work towards sustaining its use and utility for international communication. From the perspective of the global language constellation, the detailed data analysis of this substantial research project depicts German as an example of a second-rank language. The book also provides a model for analysis and description of international languages other than English. It offers a framework for strengthening the position of languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish and others and for countering exaggerated claims about the global monopoly position of English. This comprehensive handbook of the state of the German language in the world was originally published in 2015 by Walter de Gruyter in German and has been critically acclaimed. Suitable for scholars and researchers of the German language, the handbook shows in detail how intricately and thoroughly German and other second-rank languages are tied up with a great number of societies and how these statistics support or weaken the languages’ functions and maintenance.

Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley: The Political Thought of a Man of Letters argues that Huxley is not a man of letters engaged in politics, but a political thinker who chooses literature to spread his ideas. His preference for the dystopian genre is due to his belief in the tremendous impact of dystopia on twentieth-century political thought. His political thinking is not systematic, but this does not stop his analysis from supplying elements that are original and up-to-date, and that represent fascinating contributions of political theory in all the spheres that he examines from anti-Marxism to anti-positivism, from political realism to elitism, from criticism of mass society to criticism of totalitarianism, ...
