Materializing Memories

A multitude of devices and technological tools now exist to make, share, and store memories and moments with family, friends, and even strangers. Memory practices such as home movies, which originated as the privilege of a few, well-to-do families, have now emerged as ubiquitous and immediate cultures of sharing. Departing from the history of home movies, this volume offers a sophisticated understanding of technologically mediated, mostly ritualized memory practices, from early beginnings in the fin-de-siècle to today. Departing from a longue durée perspective on home movie practices, Materializing Memories moves beyond a strict historical study to grapple with highly theorized fields, suc...

Bildkulturen II

  • Categories: Art

From static oblivion traces, with circular, nearly spiral movements, the progression, both expansive and inclusive, of Grigorescu’s work, which, starting from the intimacy of a room or a kitchen, opens itself up to the structure of a house with its inhabitants or to the architecture of an entire city with its population, while moving through the urban transformations of a strongly rural and traditional Romania, in order to return and inscribe itself into the space of the body and into that of the world, in a complete superimposition (or indeed doubling) of micro and macrocosm. By enlarging his own field of vision, Grigorescu in effect circumscribes and simultaneously absorbs elements of hi...

"Lotte Reimann’s series about steel, glass, plastic, oil, and dirt - together embodied in the automobile - was inspired by amateur photographers; specifically, the nude (self-) portraits taken by a couple and discovered by Reimann on a picture sharing website. With this material as a starting point, she added images from other random sources on the Internet and then re-photographed all of them from her computer screen. Consequently, the photos are treated as raw material, an eroticised pixilation of muscle cars, burning rubber, high heels, off-roading, tremendous speed, and gas pedals, which weaves a narrative of recklessness, excitement, and arousal." -- vendor description.

The Model and Its Architecture

The fourth in the series of DSD publications, The Model and its Architecture explores the relation between knowledge and models in both scientific and architectural discourse. The significance of the model for Platonic philosophy and the contesting of this in the work of Deleuze forms the background for a consideration of the consequences of the debate in current architectural practice. At the heart of these responses is the problem of process, of design, cosmology and creative work within the layered relations of philosophy and architecture. The various conceptions of the model for architecture are examined in the writings of Vitruvius, Renaissance theorists, and philosophers of pre-modern Islam.

Mass-murdering authors. Writers at the head of a football-hooligan ring. A pilot who crafts his poetry in the sky. A tour de force of black humour and imaginary erudition, Nazi Literature in the Americas presents itself as a biographical dictionary of pan-American writers who espoused extreme right-wing ideologies in the 20th and 21st centuries. Terrifyingly witty and remarkably inventive, this is the virtuosic, one-of-a-kind masterpiece which brought Bolaño fame throughout the Spanish-speaking world. TRANSLATED BY CHRIS ANDREWS 'The best and weirdest kind of literary game... A strangely profound place to get lost’ Financial Times ‘A darkly comic celebration of the wilder horizons of writing, good, plodding, lunatic and terrible’ London Review of Books

In the spring of 2015, two exhibitions under the title Politics of Installation were made by Belgian artists Hans Demeulenaere and Bas van den Hurk. The title refers to a text by Boris Groys, in which he claims that installations made by artists reveal a sovereign world. Within these worlds there is not one dominant perspective, but rather an exchange of multiple perspectives. An important part of the project was to include art historical lines based on architectural elements. Demeulenaere refers to the work of architect Aldo van Eyck, and Van den Hurk to the architecture of Juliaan Lampens. Exhibition: Loods 12, Wetteren, Belgium (12.04-03.05.2015) / P/////AKT, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (14.06-12.07.2015).
