Nouvelle Burlesque Brutal

Performance artist Katrina Daschner's explosive third book is divided into chapters corresponding to her films Hafenperlen (2008), Aria de Mustang (2009) and Flaming Flamingoes (2011).While the burlesque narratives are told in part through film stills, flip-book effects are also used in the book format to ''read'' the gestural moments and performative aspects visible in the cinematic rendition. The stage and the exhibition are perceived as a sexualized arena of play and performance in which processes of desire and power - along with gaze scenarios - are negotiated and staged. Readers walk on to a stage setting to find themselves in a field of gazes in which they have become not just the audience but also the protagonists.

Queer Tracks describes motifs in popular music that deviate from heterosexual orientation, the binary gender system and fixed identities. This exciting cutting-edge work deals with the key concepts of current gender politics and queer theory in rock and pop music, including irony, parody, camp, mask/masquerade, mimesis/mimicry, cyborg, transsexuality, and dildo. Based on a constructivist concept of gender, Leibetseder asks: ’Which queer-feminist strategies are used in rock and pop music?’ ’How do they function?’ ’Where do they occur?’ Leibetseder's methodological process is to discover subversive strategies in queer theory, which are also used in rock and pop music, without assum...

"Pink labor on golden streets: queer art practices is particularly concerned with combining, juxtaposing, or playing off various artistic strategies where form and politics intervene. Two artistic attitudes, often perceived as divergent, are described here: the choice of form attributed to political issues versus political stances dictating the question of form. This book sheds light on contradictory standpoints of queer art practices, conceptions of the body, and ideas of 'queer abstraction, ' a term coined by Jack Judith Halberstam that raises questions to do with (visual) representations in the context of gender, sexuality, and desire"--Page [4] of cover.

Desire Change

  • Categories: Art

In the resistance to the violence of gender-based oppression, vibrant – but often ignored – worlds have emerged, full of nuance, humour, and beauty. Correcting an absence of writing about contemporary feminist work by Canadian artists, Desire Change considers the resurgence of feminist art, thought, and practice in the past decade by examining artworks that respond to themes of diversity and desire. Essays by historians, artists, and curators present an overview of a range of artistic practices including performance, installation, video, textiles, and photography. Contributors address the desire for change through three central frames: how feminist art has significantly contributed to the complex understanding of gender as it intersects with sexuality and race; the necessary critique of patriarchy and institutions as they relate to colonization within the Canadian nation-state; and the ways in which contemporary critiques are formed and expressed. Heavily illustrated with representative works, Desire Change raises both the stakes and the concerns of contemporary feminist art, with an understanding that feminism is always and necessarily plural.
