Designed as a tribute to Robert Garfias, who has conducted field work in more cultures than any other living ethnomusicologist, this volume explores the originating encounter in field work of ethnomusicologists with the musicians and musical traditions they study. The nineteen contributors provide case studies from nearly every corner of the world, including biographies of important musicians from the Philippines, Turkey, Lapland, and Korea; interviews with, and reports of learning from, musicians from Ireland, Bulgaria, Burma, and India; and analyses of how traditional musicians adapt to the encounter with modernity in Japan, India, China, Turkey, Afghanistan, Morocco, and the United States...
This volume comprises the most up-to-date account of existing knowledge on the subject of cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Its multidisciplinary approach covers cardiovascular medicine; biochemistry; immunology; molecular biology; virology; epidemiology; and clinical medicine. Cardiomyopathies and Heart Failure: -Covers all major investigational and clinical aspects of the topic; -Provides syntheses as well as reviews; -Offers a unique multidisciplinary and international perspective; -Includes an extensive list of references to relevant work; -Targeted towards practicing physicians and basic researchers.
Calcific aortic valve stenosis is the most frequent valvular heart disease in Western countries, affecting up to 13% of individuals over 75 years. The disease is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by fibro-calcification of aortic valve cusps and concomitant left ventricular remodelling due to chronic pressure overload, which can evolve into overt heart failure. It progresses very slowly until the onset of symptoms, the indication for aortic valve replacement. Today, about 300,000 aortic valve replacements are performed annually worldwide, either via surgery or transcatheter implantation. This is the only treatment shown to improve survival. There is no ...
This volume presents the proceedings of a muscle symposium, which was held as the Fourth Fujihara seminar on October 28 - November 1, 2002, at Hakone, Japan. This volume covers all fields of muscle biology, from molecules to humans. This book provides information about recent progress of muscle research as well as the problems that remain to be investigated. This volume will stimulate muscle investigators to design and perform novel experiments to clarify the mysteries in muscle contraction.
The American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2019 is bringing big science, big technology, and big networking opportunities to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this November. Atherosclerosis can affect any artery in the body, including arteries in the heart, brain, arms, legs, pelvis, and kidneys. As a result, different diseases (ischemic heart disease, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, ischemic stroke, and chronic kidney disease) may develop based on which arteries are affected. Atherosclerosis-related diseases are a global crisis and require a global response. The increasing global crisis in atherosclerosis-related diseases is a barrier to development goals including poverty reduction, health equity, economic stability, and human security. There is a synergic action between genetic, ambient, local, and systemic factors, and ultimately the progr...
