Drawing. In and Outside. Writing

This book is an in-depth study of the entanglement of drawing and writing produced by London based artists, Kelly Chorpening and Rebecca Fortnum and Belgian artists, Peter Morrens and Ans Nys during a yearlong collaboration. The project reflects on the blurring of the creative acts of drawing and writing, provoked by the artists working side by side. The research is driven by strategies of re-interpretation, re-staging, and reflecting on an other's drawings and writings. The artists found it useful to consider an exchange of drawings as a visual 'conversation' or 'correspondence'. These research strategies opened up new ways of considering the relationship between drawing and writing, particularly how tracing and copying function in the quest for knowledge and understanding.

A Companion to Contemporary Art in a Global Framework

  • Categories: Art

A Companion to Contemporary Art in a Global Framework explores the ways specialists and institutions in the fine arts, curation, cultural studies, and art history have attempted to situate art in a more global framework since the 1980s. Offering analyses of the successes and setbacks of these efforts to globalize the art world, this innovative volume presents a new and exciting way of considering art in its global contexts. Essays by an international panel of leading scholars and practicing artists assert that what we talk about as ‘art’ is essentially a Western concept, thus any attempts at understanding art in a global framework require a revising of established conceptual definitions....

The Story of Drawing

  • Categories: Art

Drawing is at the heart of human creativity. The most democratic form of art-making, it requires nothing more than a plain surface and a stub of pencil, a piece of chalk or an inky brush. Our prehistoric ancestors drew with natural pigments on the walls of caves, and every subsequent culture has practised drawing – whether on papyrus, parchment or paper. Artists throughout history have used drawing as part of the creative process. While painting and sculpture have been shaped heavily by money and influence, drawing has always offered extraordinary creative latitude. Here we see the artist at his or her most unguarded. Susan Owens offers a glimpse over artists’ shoulders – from Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Hokusai to Van Gogh, Käthe Kollwitz and Yayoi Kusama – as they work, think and innovate, as they scrutinise the world around them or escape into their imaginations. The Story of Drawing loops around the established history of art, sometimes staying close, at other times diving into exhilarating and altogether less familiar territory.

Inefficient Mapping

  • Categories: Art

"Working from a speculative, more-than-human ontological position, Inefficient Mapping: A Protocol for Attuning to Phenomena presents a new, experimental cartographic practice and non-representational methodological protocol that attunes to the subaltern genealogies of sites and places, proposing a wayfaring practice for traversing the land founded on an ethics of care. As a methodological protocol, inefficient mapping inscribes the histories and politics of a place by gesturally marking affective and relational imprints of colonisation, industrialisation, appropriation, histories, futures, exclusions, privileges, neglect, survival, and persistence. Inefficient Mapping details a research exp...
