The author was born in Cornwall in 1764 and was a sailor from the age of 14. This autobiography, covering the years 1778-1795, describes seamanship in the eighteenth century. He sailed among others with Admiral Nelson on Diomede. He experienced the British evacuating New York, the foundations of St. John's, New Brunswick, and other historic events. The manuscript was found 100 years after his death.
