Dixon Kemp's Manual of Yacht and Boat Sailing

This is a new edition of one of the most famous boatbuilding manuals of all time. It is essentially a large format book of plans. The central text of the original 1895 edition, which describes the plans, is reprinted in multicolumn arrangement. New footnotes on figures in the text have been added as an extended appendix, giving the modern reader an understanding of the materials, methods and plans of boatbuilding at the turn of the century. Each of the 130 plans has been printed with annotations by John Leather to provide the reader with a succinct explanation of plans now nearly 100 years old. As a finishing touch, John Leather also includes an introduction and biography of the famous but little-researched Dixon Kemp.

Chasing Thugs, Nazis, and Reds

Texas Ranger Norman Dixon made the front pages of newspapers, but his rigid sense of integrity prevented him from discussing his cases with his wife or his sons, or anyone else, even decades later. As a Ranger, Dixon broke up the largest oil field theft ring in Texas history, worked to solve the most infamous cold case in Texas history, sought the Phantom Killer, investigated a near-mutiny by cadets and veterans on the campus of Texas A&M, rushed to a rural county to head off a lynching, and kept watch over Texas during World War II. He became the go-to investigator for the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, governors, and the state legislature. During the final years of his career, which coincided with the McCarthy era in the 1950s, he was the chief of internal security, charged with protecting Texans from the Red Menace. Using Ranger Dixon’s meticulously-kept diary entries, Kemp Dixon now tells his father’s compelling story.

Yacht Architecture

Excerpt from Yacht Architecture: A Treatise on the Laws Which Govern the Resistance of Bodies Moving in Water, Propulsion by Steam and Sail; Yacht Designing; And Yacht Building IN publishing the first edition of Yacht Architecture in 1885 I was able to state that the knowledge of the scientific principle on which yacht designing is based had been considerably extended since the publication of my large work entitled Yacht Designing in 1876. This can also be said of the period between 1885 and 1897, and no doubt the present generation of yachtsmen and those interested in yachts have a much more exact knowledge of the science Of Naval Architecture than their predecessors had, owing to their hav...
