Reverse Engineering

This edited collection of essays from world-leading academic and industrial authors yields insight into all aspects of reverse engineering. Methods of reverse engineering analysis are covered, along with special emphasis on the investigation of surface and internal structures. Frequently-used hardware and software are assessed and advice given on the most suitable choice of system. Also covered is rapid prototyping and its relationship with successful reverse engineering.

Model transformations are the glue that tie modelling activities together. If you’ve used modelling in anger then, whether you know it or not, you’ve used model transformations. They come in all shapes and sizes from moving models between di?erent tools to generating implementations. Model transformations have humble beginnings—at one point, not long ago, it was said by many ‘in the know’ that the way forward in model transformations was to use XSLT. That this idea now raises a wry smile shows how far the model transformation community has come in a short time. Where once model transformations were hacked together in a variety of unsuitable languages, we now have a number of powerf...

Reverse Engineering: Mechanisms, Structures, Systems & Materials

A comprehensive look at reverse engineering as a legitimate learning, design, and troubleshooting tool This unique book examines the often underappreciated and occasionally maligned technique of reverse engineering. More than a shortcut for the lazy or unimaginative to reproduce an artless copy of an existing creation, reverse engineering is an essential brick – if not a keystone – in the pathway to a society’s technological advancement. Written by an engineer who began teaching after years in industry, Reverse Engineering reviews this meticulous analytical process with a breadth and depth as never before. Find out how to: Learn by “mechanical dissection” Deduce the role, purpose, ...

Universal Traceability. A Comprehensive, Generic, Technology-Independent, and Semantically Rich Approach

Traceability describes the ability of stakeholders to understand and follow relationships between artifacts that play some role in software development. It is essential for many development tasks, e.g., quality assurance, requirements management, or software maintenance. Aiming to overcome various deficiencies of existing traceability concepts, this book presents a universal approach describing required features of traceability solutions. This includes a technology-independent, generic template for the definition of semantically rich traceability relationship types and technology-independent patterns for the retrieval of traceability information, reflecting generic problems common to traceability applications. The universal approach is implemented on the basis of two concrete technologies which facilitate comprehensive traceability: the TGraph approach and OWL ontologies. The applicability of the approach is shown by three case studies dealing with the reuse of software artifacts, process model refinement, and requirements management, respectively.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the First International Conference on Software Language Engineering, SLE 2008, held in Toulouse, France, in September 2008. The 16 revised full papers and 1 revised short paper presented together with 1 tool demonstration paper and 2 keynote lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 106 initial submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on language and tool analysis and evaluation, concrete and abstract syntax, language engineering techniques, language integration and transformation, language implementation and analysis, as well as language engineering pearls.

Flexible Views for View-based Model-driven Development

Modern software development faces the problem of fragmentation of information across heterogeneous artefacts in different modelling and programming languages. In this dissertation, the Vitruvius approach for view-based engineering is presented. Flexible views offer a compact definition of user-specific views on software systems, and can be defined the novel ModelJoin language. The process is supported by a change metamodel for metamodel evolution and change impact analysis.

Viruses, Hardware and Software Trojans

This book provides readers with a valuable reference on cyber weapons and, in particular, viruses, software and hardware Trojans. The authors discuss in detail the most dangerous computer viruses, software Trojans and spyware, models of computer Trojans affecting computers, methods of implementation and mechanisms of their interaction with an attacker — a hacker, an intruder or an intelligence agent. Coverage includes Trojans in electronic equipment such as telecommunication systems, computers, mobile communication systems, cars and even consumer electronics. The evolutionary path of development of hardware Trojans from "cabinets", "crates" and "boxes" to the microcircuits (IC) is also discussed. Readers will benefit from the detailed review of the major known types of hardware Trojans in chips, principles of their design, mechanisms of their functioning, methods of their introduction, means of camouflaging and detecting, as well as methods of protection and counteraction.
