Indicator-based Sustainability Assessment of the German Energy System and its Transition
The energy transition not only has an impact on technical infrastructures but also leads to socio-economic changes. To evaluate the sustainability aspects of the German Energiewende, the authors have developed a monitoring system which includes 45 indicators and their corresponding target values for 2020, 2030, and 2050 as well as a rating system for the year 2020 based on a distance-to-target approach and traffic color lights.

This book addresses the complexity of urbanization, impacts of climate change and climate change adaptation for the metropolitan region of Santiago de Chile, with a special focus on the most pressing issues of natural hazards, water and energy supply. The book exemplifies a conceptual approach for the development of adaptation measures, their evaluation and implementation in a decision support framework at the science-policy interface. It builds on scientific analyses of social and natural scientists, a participatory process with local authorities and a mutual learning network between large agglomerations in Latin America. Risk Habitat Megacity
Megacity development and the inherent risks and opportunities for humans and the environment is a theme of growing urgency in the 21st century. Focusing on Latin America where urbanization is most advanced, this book studies the complexity of a ‘mega-urban system’ and explores interrelations between sectors and issues by providing an in-depths study of one particular city, Santiago de Chile. The book attempts to (i) focus on the emergence of risk in megacities by analyzing risk elements, (ii) evaluate the extent and severity of risks, (iii) develop strategies to cope with adverse risks, and (iv) to guide urban development by combining concepts with empirical evidence. The emergence of a global and technological world and the accelerating dissemination of technology does not only give rise to technological, economic, social, environmental, political and educational tasks. Significant philosophical questions, epistemic reflections and cultural debates result and have to be pushed forward. To move sustainable development from a political mission statement and scientific challenge into everyday life we have to shift our focus of attention to those who are driving a non-sustainable development: human beings and their societal and cultural conditions and interactions. Ultimately not the ecological footprint is the core challenge, but we and those who are leaving this footprint. The idea of the present volume of Sustainable Development - Relationships to Culture, Knowledge and Ethics was developed in the course of the international conference "Sustainability 2010: The Cultural Dimension", which took place in July 2010 in Berlin. The aim of this book is to provide discussions about cultural, epistemic and ethical implications of contemporary changes and emerging challenges on an interdisciplinary and international level.

Umweltforschung quergedacht
Für die Erfassung, Bewertung und Lösung komplexer Umweltprobleme ist eine interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung von Forschung und Lehre unerlässlich. In Grundlagen- und angewandter Forschung, aber auch in der universitären Lehre gibt es verstärkt Ansätze, bei denen die Notwendigkeit eines fachübergreifenden Diskurses erkannt und umgesetzt wird. Es fällt auf, daß im Rahmen der hier vorgestellten Ansätze Wissenschafts-Kooperationen verwirklicht werden, die noch vor wenigen Jahren in der Umweltforschung undenkbar gewesen wären. Die wachsende Durchlässigkeit der Grenzen zwischen den Disziplinen wird hier anhand von Themen wie Klimafolgen-, Katastrophen- und Technikfolgenforschung, globaler Wandel, nachhaltige Umweltpolitik und modernes Umweltrecht verdeutlicht.
