Big Events, Small Clauses
This book investigates specific syntactic means of event elaboration across seven Indo-European languages (English, German, Norwegian, French, Russian, Latin and Ancient Greek): bare and comitative small clauses (“absolutes”), participle constructions and related clause-like but non-finite adjuncts that increase descriptive granularity with respect to constitutive parts of the matrix event (elaboration in the narrowest sense), or describe eventualities that are co-located and connected with but not part of the matrix event. The book falls in two parts. Part I addresses central theoretical issues: How is the co-eventive interpretation of such adjuncts achieved? What is the internal syntax of participial and converb constructions? How do these constructions function at the discourse level, as compared to various finite structures that are available for co-eventive elaboration? Part II takes an empirical cross-linguistic perspective. It consists of five self-contained chapters that are based on parallel corpora and study either the use of a specific construction across at least two of the seven object languages, or how a specific construction is rendered in other languages.
A Comparative Study on the Translation of Detective Stories from a Systemic Functional Perspective
This book presents a corpus-based investigation of verbal projection in detective stories and their translations. Adopting both diachronic and synchronic approaches to compare two different Chinese translations, the book is one of the first attempts to conduct a comprehensive lexico-grammatical, logico-semantic and rhetorical, as well as contextual analysis of verbal projection in the Chinese context, especially the classical Chinese language context. Further, it studies the differences and similarities of different translators’ choices from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives. Given its scope, the book is relevant for all those interested in functional linguistics, translation studies and detective stories.
Modality and Diachronic Construction Grammar
This volume explores how Diachronic Construction Grammar can shed new light on changes in a central and well-researched domain of grammar, namely modality. Its main goal is to show how constructional analyses can help us address some of the long-standing questions that have informed discussions of modal expressions and their development, and to illustrate the processes that are involved in these developments on the basis of data from languages such as English, Finnish, French, Galician, German, and Japanese. The studies in this volume are organized around three interrelated topics. The first of these concerns the organization of modal constructions in a network. A second focus area of the studies in this volume concerns the developmental pathways that modal constructions follow diachronically. The third topic that ties the contributions of this volume together is the contrast between constructionalization and constructional change.
Methods in Pragmatics
Methods in Pragmatics provides a systematic overview of the different types of data, the different methods of data collection and data analysis used in pragmatic research. It offers authoritative and comprehensive surveys of the entire breadth of methods and methodologies. Part 1 covers introspectional, philosophical and cognitive pragmatics. Part 2 is devoted to experimental pragmatics, including discourse completion and dialogue construction tasks, role-plays and other production and comprehension tasks. Part 3 reviews observational pragmatics including ethnographic and discourse analytic methods, and part 4, finally, is devoted to corpus pragmatics including accounts of corpus compilation, annotation and data retrieval specific to pragmatic research. Each contribution provides a state-of-the-art account of the precise workings of one particular method, its applications in the relevant research literature as well as a critical assessment of its strengths and weaknesses and the type of pragmatic research questions for which it is most suitable.

Was verstehen wir eigentlich unter Dolmetschen? Was bezeichnen wir als Übersetzung? Und wie groß sind die Spielräume, die wir Übersetzern und Dolmetschern zugestehen? All diese Fragen greift der vorliegende Band auf. Ein Teil der Beiträge beschäftigt sich mit Themenbereichen der intra- und interlingualen Übersetzung unter besonderer Berücksichtigung sprachlich-struktureller Phänomene.
