Stylianos Schicho
Viennese artist Stylianos Schicho depicts both animals and humans in his large-scale works as he addresses the phenomenon of ìbeing watchedî in contemporary society. His fragmentary visual worlds voice criticism of issues such as capitalism and consumerism. The observer becomes the observed when scrutinised by the oversized eyes. Or in the words of the artist: "There is always someone missing from the picture and that is the person who is standing in front of it." Schichoís works are a blend of painting and drawing. Rural Artists' Colonies in Europe, 1870-1910
This ground-breaking book presents a critical study of pictorial narrative in nineteenth-century European painting. Covering works from France, Germany, Britain, Italy and elsewhere, it traces the ways in which immensely popular artists like Jean-Léon Gérôme, Karl von Piloty and William Quiller Orchardson used unique visual strategies to tell thrilling and engaging stories.
