Can We Keep Them?

Can We Keep Them? A True Story By: Robert A. LaFrance Can We Keep Them? A True Story is based on the true story of the time the author and his two children, Noel (7) and Carly (4), raised four baby geese that appeared in their yard by chance one spring. Since the author is a biologist and teacher, they had already had many types of pets, but the geese were the most unique. As a result of being allowed to raise them to adulthood, both children learned about the responsibility of raising young wild animals, which eventually have to be returned to nature, where they belong. In addition, they came to respect and understand that we have a duty to learn about, appreciate, and be kind to animals, allowing them to live their own lives based on what is best for them. This allows all of us to see ourselves as being part of, and being connected to, nature.

Winner of the Herbert A. Simon Book Award of the American Political Science Association, American Society for Public Administration Book Award of the American Society for Public Administration Political scientists and public administration scholars have long recognized that innovation in public agencies is contingent on entrepreneurial bureaucratic executives. With euro banknotes and coins starting to circulate as of January 2002, this timely book comes at a crucial juncture for the European Union. Exploring the origins of and progress toward the introduction of the euro, the contributors focus on the importance of economic and monetary union (EMU) as part of the larger process of European integration. Thus, chapters consider the value and limits of a range of theoretical approaches for understanding economic and monetary integration, the pros and cons of EMU's institutional design, and country-specific experiences. With an international group of leading scholars representing a range of disciplines, this book offers a broad perspective on the dynamics of EMU.

Even though it failed to prevent World War II, the League of Nations left a lasting legacy. This precedent-setting international organization created important institutions and initiatives in labor, economics, culture, science, and more, from the International Labor Organization to initiatives targeting education, taxation, nutrition, and other issues. Otherwise marginalized in global diplomacy, Latin Americans were involved, and often acted as leaders, in many League-related activities and made a number of positive contributions to the League. In this book foremost scholars from Europe and the Americas consider Latin American leadership and experiences in the League of Nations. Using research in frequently overlooked collections, Beyond Geopolitics makes groundbreaking contributions to the study of Latin American international relations, the history of the League of Nations, and the broader story of cooperation across borders.

Linking Research to Practice

Information and communication technologies have long promised to provide quality education, improve healthcare, allow open government, and solve environmental issues. To realize this potential and influence policy-making and programme design, the Singapore Internet Research Center, supported by the IDRC, created an innovative research capacity-building programme, SIRCA.
