Upon Waking: 58 Voices Speaking Out From the Shadow of Abuse

“Upon Waking: 58 Voices Speaking Out From the Shadow of Abuse" is the culmination of the Let’s Talk About It! Poetry Project created by Annette Gagliardi and Laura Kozy Lanik and represents the work of 58 poets from around the state and the country and Canada. Whether we have had first hand experiences or not, the subject of abuse shapes the world we are in. It is our hope that the many victims of abuse can find solace within these pages or that their voice is echoed in one or more of these poems. Even if you are not a victim of abuse, these poems help us become more aware of the atrocities, told and untold, that happen daily and make us more empathetic to the long healing process of survivors.

Inland

Pamela Alexander's poetry is characterized by inventive language, scrupulous accuracy of imagery, and a winning fusion of the comic and the deeply serious. Her subjects vary as widely as her settings, which range from the New Hampshire woods to the Arizona desert. A family life eccentric to the point of chaos, close observations of wildlife, and coastal sailing are among the poet's topics. Despite this variety, Inland has an emerging organization that suggests a kind of plot. The family is left behind in the way that families of origin always are, revealed fully only in perspective: “foghorns / in the harbor, two different pitches / at different intervals / repeating so often I didn't hear...

The Ghost Bride

A haunting, evocative and highly unusual romantic debut and now a Netflix Mandarin original drama premiering January 2020! Seventeen-year-old Li Lan lives in 1890s Malaya with her quietly-ruined father, who returns one evening with a proposition - the fabulously wealthy Lim family want Li Lan to marry their son. The only problem is, he's dead. After a fateful visit to the Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also her desire for the Lims' handsome new heir. At night she is drawn into the Chinese afterlife - a world of ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, monstrous bureaucracy and vengeful spirits. Enlisting the help of mysterious Er Lang (a dragon turned clerk) Li Lan must uncover the secrets of the ghost world - before she becomes trapped there forever. Drawing on traditional Malayan folklore and superstition, THE GHOST BRIDE is a haunting, exotic and romantic read perfect for fans of EMPRESS ORCHID and MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA.

Accidental Adult (n.): an individual whose age indicates maturity, but whose actions indicate otherwise. Those carefree days of post-college life went away in the blink of an eye. Now you spend your money on mortgage payments and Saturdays at dance recitals. The mixtapes you blasted out of your two-door coupe went the same way as the car, traded in--for a sliding-door minivan with a complimentary Wiggles CD. If life's the ultimate road trip, it's time to stop listening to the GPS of responsible adulthood. Instead, follow the lead of reluctant grown-up Colin Sokolowski, who proves growing up doesn't necessarily mean selling out. With a little guidance, you can survive the inevitable trek to o...
