[Re]Gained in Translation II
Times are changing, and with them, the norms and notions of correctness. Despite a wide-spread belief that the Bible, as a “sacred original,” only allows one translation, if any, new translations are constantly produced and published for all kinds of audiences and purposes. The various paradigms marked by the theological, political, and historical correctness of the time, group, and identity and bound to certain ethics and axiomatic norms are reflected in almost every current translation project. Like its predecessor, the current volume brings together scholars working at the intersection of Translation Studies, Bible Studies, and Theology, all of which share a special point of interest concerning the status of the Scriptures as texts fundamentally based on the act of translation and its recurring character. It aims to breathe new life into Bible translation studies, unlock new perspectives and vistas of the field, and present a bigger picture of how Bible [re]translation works in society today.
Bridging Languages and Cultures
Translation Studies already face new tasks in order to take account of and to discuss the changing translation environment, in order to seek new approaches and tools for description, analysis and teaching activities. This volume of selected papers of the conference Bridging Languages and Cultures brings together current viewpoints in Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication; it provides both specific focus on certain aspects and developments and a more general overview of research landscape. Enhancing and analysing Project Communication
Different cultures and languages make web-based communication among the members of international research projects often complex. Focussing on frequently neglected internal communication, this cumulative PhD thesis seeks to present methods from applied LSP research on a concrete case study – a research project from the area of Public Health. Aiming to establish a winwin situation between systematic approaches and communication optimisation, the case study is also used to verify known models. Systematic approaches can be beneficial for enhancing project communication, if they are part of a circle of theoria cum praxi. The thesis closes with appeals to linguists, project leaders and funding agencies for improving project communication as well as the involvement of applied linguistics in future.
Translational Action and Intercultural Communication
Translation and interpreting studies and intercultural communication have so far largely been treated as separate disciplines. Translational Action and Intercultural Communication offers an overview of a range of different theoretical and methodological approaches to examining the hitherto largely ignored connection between the two research strands. Drawing on three key concepts ('functional equivalence', 'dilated speech situation' and 'intercultural understanding'), this interdisciplinary volume attempts to interrelate the following thematic strands: procedures of mediating between cultures in translational action, problems of intercultural communication in translational action, and insights into intercultural communication based on analyses of translational action. The volume features both contrastive papers and papers which investigate communicative events in actu. The analyses presented deal with a variety of genres and types of interaction, including children's books, speech acts in dramatic text, popular science and economic texts, excerpts from intercultural university encounters, phatic talk, toast giving and medical communication.
Theory of Mind in Translation
Taking the perspective of others is central to translation. But does translation train this uniquely human capacity? This book introduces the concept of Theory of Mind (ToM) to model one of the central features of translation, the meta-representation of others, and presents three innovative studies which investigate the question using brain scans, eye-tracking and key-logging to shed new light on the role of non-linguistic macro-competences on the translation process.
Languacultural Hybridity and Translation
In an increasingly globalised world, the cultures of Orient and Occident are no longer firmly separated. This hybridity is also a part of literature—a concept which needs to be explored in Translation Studies. This study examines its evolution across language, culture, literature, and translation. It introduces a sociolinguistic approach for studying marginalized hybrid texts and their translations into English, focusing on the power dynamics that dichotomize the world into First/Third worlds. The author examines how sociological factors in central societies affect the acceptance and recognition of marginalized literary works within Western literary circles and world literature. The study analyses classical and modern Persian literature. It highlights the double-voicedness in these texts. By illustrating how hybrid elements from Rúmí’s mystical poems and Hidáyat’s surrealistic prose are recreated in their English translations, it elevates the analysis of hybrid elements to a languacultural level.
